It's a 1960s song, with literally hundreds of covers.

My teacher used to play it to us in 3rd year juniors. True fact.

I like Malvina Reynolds' version (she wrote it) it's the one I'm most familiar with as it's the theme tune to the TV series Weeds.

Just to add to that, he also used to play us Maxwell's Silver Hammer, which, apart from being one of The Beatles' worst ever songs, has got to be the most inappropriate mainstream song I can think of for a bunch of 9 and 10 year olds. Apart from the subject matter (Maxwell even kills his teacher for christ sake, last thing he should have been doing was putting ideas in to the heads of a load of savages from Kex) there's also the small matter of the first verse:

    Joan was quizzical
    Studied pataphysical
    Science in the home
Late nights all alone with a test tube
    Oh, oh, oh, oh

Oh aye? "Oh, oh, oh, oh" What exactly is she doing with that test tube then? And pervy Maxwell has obviously been watching as when he gives her a ring he starts taking the piss, "Can I take you out to the pictures, Joa, oa, oa, oan?"
