How can the same BBC that brought us 'Sherlock' dole out the tripe that was 'The Three Musketeers'?
I lasted through to the end credits but only through the morbid fascination of watching a' train wreck' What was Peter Capaldi thinking? He surely doesn't need the money as he is the new Doctor Who.

The production values were high but the music sounded like 'Riverdance' rather than any pretext of supplying sound moods for events taking place in Historic Paris/France

"Sunday night viewing doesn't get any tougher than this!"

The BBC make a lot more rubbish like Musketeers than good stuff.

Yerbut they are generally OK when it comes to original drama. Things like 'Downton' and 'Midsummer Murders' (or Mills & Boon' TV as I call it) I tend to leave to ITV. Sky generally relies on American imports rather than producing their own.

When it comes to 'reality TV' though...............

Paid our TV licence this week, and I honestly wondered why. It's just endless celebrity sh#te.

I'm not into soaps cos I'm never in early evenings to keep up with the plot. The only thing we make a point of watching is MOTD, and more often than not we're asleep before it comes on.

I reckon I could quite easily live without the TV.

Personally I pick and choose which is easy as we live in Italy and only access BBC through VPN and I-Player. We live in the country and only have access to internet via a microwave signal and 4Mb bandwidth (on a good day) isn't enough to live stream most of the time when you add in the VPN link you have to use to spoof a UK address for Beeb which often slows it to around 1Mb
Personally I usually only watch Dr Who, Sherlock F1, HIGNFY, Weekly Wipe and one or two documentaries. The missus watches dross like 'The Paradise' and 'Mr Selfridge' but in fairness "only to 'iron to". Ital;ian TV is even worse (apart from the skimpily clad 'bimbos' that seem to appear on virtually every TV variety show' of which there are many. Only see them when we are eating out as nearly all restaurants around here have a TV playing in the corner
    somewhere
Wife wants me to get Freesat but where we are I need something the size of Jodrell Bank to handle the new Astra transmission and that aint happening

I lived without TV for 4 years at uni, plus the year after I graduated. I finally got a licence to watch the Olympics and we've renewed it again after it ran out, but I have no idea why. Literally the only time we watch TV is around every other day (if that) at around 8pm ish where we watch a Big Bang Theory repeat for half an hour whilst eating our tea.

Sky have produced some decent stuff of their own - Mad Dogs and The Tunnel to name 2. There have been others as well, Treasure Island and the other similar type of drama they did this last Christmas that the name escapes me.

~It was an old classic novel but not as famous as Treasure Island which is why I can't remember the name and can't be arsed looking it up!

I was taken in by the hype and I watched, or at least started to watch, the Three Musketeers. What a load of old crap it was.

And not a hint of a French accent anywhere. That old lass that ran the lodging house sounded like she could have gone downstairs and sung "Any old iron" to perfection.

    If you mean Moonfleet

... that was just awful. A wonderful novel savaged beyond recognition and squeezed into two x one hour slots, including adverts.

American imports are usually better though.

Apart from Sherlock what do they make that's any good, Casualty, Holby City, Waterloo Road, Atlantis, The Musketeers, not really on a par with Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, Walking Dead or Sons of Anarchy are they?

They've made cracking drama over the years. The Street, Life On Mars/Ashes to Ashes, Sherlock etc. But they've made huge cuts in recent years and my favourite BBC show Being Human was axed despite great viewing figures for sumat hidden away on Three. Yet the budget for Dr Who, Eastenders and the Come Dancing ******** have increased. I like Dr Who, but it hasn't improved with the extra coin on it. And don't get me started on MOTD and the sums spent on the so-called 'experts' they employ. Robbie Fowler? Kevin Kilbane? **** off.
    .
I'm loving Weekly Wipe and House of Fools at the minute. So there is the odd reason to watch BBC.

You beat me to it Andy. Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes are brilliant examples that have been made relatively recently but they are outstanding compared to the usual stuff. Was Luther a BBC production? If so that was brilliant as is are the Life on Earth programmes but they do let themselves down with some of the **** they put out.

Think the trap you are falling into here is assuming that everybody wants the same thing.
Personally I thought the Musketeers thing was OK but then again I wasn't watching it expecting it to be a faithful reproduction of the book, just wanted a bit of light entertainment for an hour. The accents thing I think you can also put out of your mind because if they had gone the other way it could have ended up sounding like an episode of Allo Allo or Monty Python where people speak in outrageous French accents (you know the bit I mean)
As for the other programmes mentioned I love Luther, Sherlock etc Being Human Life On Mars etc . (Speaking of which American Telly is held up as all things good but look at the pigs ear they made of LOM) Sky gets it wrong too , I was also enjoying Moonfleet until I started looking at the clock i thinking how the hell are they going to fit it all in and as it turned out it was like they thought we'll leave that bit out and that **** we've run out of money anyway..the end!
So basically for me it's each to their own I think a lot of TV is tripe especially the reality stuff but viewing figures would indicate a lot of people don't agree with me, that's life.
Same with people who make a point that they hardly watch TV, well that's great for them and personally I've got plenty of hobbies and other stuff that I like doing but lets remember that there are a lot of people out there who are not as fortunate (elderly disabled etc) who rely on the telly and its odds on that they will have their own opinions too and it won't be all highbrow cutting edge stuff that they want.
