I think the point about personal taste is the right one. I'd rather give Jim Dobbin a blowjob than watch Eastenders or any soap but some people love them. The BbC clearly doesn't have the budgets that the major American networks such as HBO enjoy so it's difficult to compare as it's not like for like anyway way wouldn't the British Version of Breaking Bad be quite boring - chemistry teacher gets cancer - how will he fund his cancer treatment? Oh the NHS will pay for it end of programme. Having lived in a few other countries where tv is absolutely appalling such as Australia I value the television we have over here. I probably watch 10 hours a week most of it on the BBC, or The Big Bang on E4. I did watch the Musketeers programme and whilst clearly not in the league of Sherlock or Lutther or anything with John Simm I found it ok. my 92 yes old gran who I watched it with loved it. BBC is worth the licence fee just to see Paxman bait politicians.
There is other good stuff especially crime related - Luther and Silent Witness spring to mind for example - Dr Who is another one which is better than anything else anyone produces in that genre - true there is some rubbish but thats true for all producers
