What do people think will be the number of points required to avoid relegation this season?

I definitely think it will be a lot lower than last season, maybe as low as 48. So that's another 28 points from 21 games we would need.

7 wins and 7 draws. Definitely achievable imho.

1 more than third off bottom, or the same as the third off bottom if we have a better goal difference, same as it's ever been. People become a bit pre-occupied with how many points for safety when there's no answer until the last game has been played.

I'm not having a go at the original poster, by the way, as it's simply a question, but I just don't understand how people can say we need x points to be safe when we don't know how many points our rivals are going to get.

    OK, I'll rephrase it then.

How many points would you be happy with Barnsley getting this season & Do you think this will keep us up or not?

I think we'll have to win 8 or 9 games which will be a tall order

No teams adrift, including us. So I'd say it looks on for another season like last season, where 55 will be needed.

We have 21 games left, 11 home and 10 away. My best optimistic guess is we might garner 34 points, making 54 in total. So we might just do it, but it's going to the wire.

Less than last season IMO. A lot less 45/46 maybe.

Before Saturday I'd have just been happy to add another 3 points to the total! I'd be hoping we could push towards the 50 points mark, but we'll have to find a bit more consistency in the side first. The next few games are key. If we can get 7 points from the Blackburn, Wednesday and Charlton games we should be looking at 50 points and safety, but 46-48 points may see us safe this season. We can only really be losing half a dozen or so more though if we want to stay up and we could do without these being the games against our rivals at the bottom. 7 points from the next three games may lift us out of the bottom three and then it becomes pretty obvious what we need to do, i.e. get more points than the teams behind us.

I may be biased, but i think we have an advantage over our rivals, in that plenty have written us off, whereas we're a much better team than most of the bottom half of the table. We're only going to get better too,. Particularly if DW can add the three quality players he's after.

I agree, we should be able to catch a few teams unawares, until they realise we aren't going down lightly without a fight. People have always written Barnsley off in the past, so this season is no exception, much to their detriment usually ....

The top quote does it not say how many points would you be happy getting ?

I told you how many I would be happy with, but what you really wanted to know is how many i think we will finish with ? Yes?

I think we will need similar to last season as the points are similar now as they were the same time last season. After 26 games Cardiff were top on 56 and we were bottom with 21. Current league position as we all know is Leicester top after 26 games on 57 points and we have 20 after 25 games. So I agree it depends what points our rivals get but I think we are going to need 53 /54 to survive.

Last season was a bit freakish though. I would say 46 to 50 for safety is most likely.
