ex Yorkshire, Ackworth born player, died aged 58. I worshipped him as a young 'un, he would have been amazing in todays one-day formats. Destructive, and a good bowler. RIP Stevo
Yes whole hearted could hit quick runs as well part of the first Yorkshire team I followed. Agree with sentiments.
Agree Andy...used to watch Steveo in the Sunday League wi mi Dad in the Seventys....Great one day bowler, him at one end, and Arnie Sidebum at the other .A decent middle order bat aswell, knock a quick 40 up in no time to move the run-rate along.. In fact I think he played for Barnsley CC at Shaw Lane n'all....RIP Steveo..
He did play at Shaw Lane. In those days, I played tennis there, often at the same time they were playing cricket. The tennis courts were behind the sight screen opposite the Grammar School end. I remember having to take cover one day as Stevenson began peppering the court with sixes.
When we had a proper Yorkshire team. Loved the fact that he looked like he loved what he was doing. Larger than life.
Very sad news. A cricketing hero of mine back in my 70s schooldays. Saw him take 8 wkts in a Roses match at Headingley to win his county cap. Also remember seeing him smash 111 at Chesterfield against Derbyshire with some awesome hitting for a no10 batter! RIP Stevo.......
Greatly saddened to hear this, especially as I played against him in a cup game for Ackworth when he was playing as a fourteen-year-old for Old Sharlston. He was one of two young fast bowlers who wreaked havoc that day, the other being called Staples. I don't know what became of him. For the record, young Graham knocked my middle stump out when I had reached just three! He was just too quick and slippery. I remember also that OS had the Rugby League player, Tommy Smales in their side. We were well-beaten that night, mainly because of the exploits of Stevenson and Staples, both of whom were just too fast and skiddy, even at the age of fourteen. RIP Young Graham - too young to die. Sure they need all-rounders in heaven.
Was lucky enough to play in the same Ackworth side as him. I'm sure Mr X will have a few memories. Nice bloke, big drinker. Sadly a curse for too many good young lads at the club.
Bloody hell, played against him many times for Stainborough when he played for Ackworth, obviously he was going to be great even back then. Great shock to hear of his death at such a young age. Makes me realise how bloody lucky I am. RIP Graham Stevenson
Bloody hell. Sad news. Great player at all levels, and based on the couple of occasions I spoke to him, genuinely nice guy. RIP Graham
Great guy full of fun Been ill for years - cancer Captained him at ackworth Always helped others Opened with him at monk bretton We were 120-0 off 14 overs Grsham had scored 106 of em On his day a great swashbuckling player Never heard him say a wrong word about anybody he just wanted to enjoy life Geoff boycott did a lot to support him He made his yorks debut aged 17 At the time he was playing for barnsley v scarborough at shaw lane , policeman came into tea room asking for him Graham wax reslly worried only to be told to repirt for yorkshire debut the next dsy He played in the best barnsley team ever Steve oldham Arnie sidebottom Steve gott Dave lycett Numerous others Rip graham a true yorkshire legend x
I remember going into the bar to get a couple of drinks when Boycott was going into bat and the barman said "I hope he's out first ball."
Echo all of that. A great Yorkshire player in his day, pretty much in the Ian Botham mode. Maybe had Botham not made the strides he did Graham might have done the same for England that Beefy did. What a shame that Yorkshire stopped playing at Shaw Lane. They used to play around the county a lot more than they do now. I remember a horribly windy day at Huddersfield when Boycott lost a contact lens at the wicket and both he and Dickie Bird were searching for it on their hands and knees. Can't remember if he found it or not. Great days watching top class cricket. I have been starved of that in recent years although I did get to the Cheltenham Festival a lot when I was living down there in Gloucester. Saw Yorkshire play there a couple of times - Richie Richardson planted a big six on top of the College gym roof in one game.
