http://songmeanings.com/m/songs/view/3530822107858574968/ Thus whole song has got great lyrics Jay made me remember it fannytashdick as they say.
Seen him a few times over the years, but would have loved to see that. IMHO, his output up to and including bits of Don't Try This At Home was just phenomenal. He's gone off the boil since, although he still does some good things, but that period from 83 to 91 he was superb. I'm not even gong to try to pick any lines out of this, it's all brilliant: I'll never forget the first day I met her That September morning was clear and fresh The way she spoke and laughed at my jokes And the way she rubbed herself Against the edge of my desk She became a magic mystery to me And we'd sit together in double History twice a week And some days we'd walk the same way home And it's surprising how quick A little rain can clear the streets We dreamed of her and compared our dreams But that was all that I ever tasted She lied to me with her body you see I lied to myself 'bout the chances I'd wasted The times we were close Were far and few between In the darkness at the dances in the school canteen Did she close her eyes like I did As we held each other tight And la la la la la la la la means I love you She danced with me and I still hold that memory Soft and sweet And I stare up at her window As I walk down her street But I never made the first team, I just made the first team laugh And she never came to the phone She was always in the bath In the end, it took me a dictionary To find out the meaning of unrequited While she was giving herself for free At a party to which I was never invited I never understood my failings then And I hide my humble hopes now Thinking back she made us want her A girl not old enough to shave her legs If you haven't got a girl that comes to mind when you read that, then you were never a teenager.
Aye Jay still good live. He's just rereleased Life is a Riot for the 30th (gulp) anniversary and the encore version is on that. I love his stuff up to William Bloke which has another favourite line "now I feel like I've won the cup everytime that we make love. 45 minutes each way at half time I hear a brass band play". Less consistent after that but still some gems.
Great song though I've always thought Man in the Corner a Shop or That's Entertainment were Weller's best lyrics.
Bit soppy like but it's still amazing writing, it's the first verse from Suck it and see by Arctic Monkeys "Your love is like a studded leather headlock Your kiss it could put creases in the rain You're rarer than a can a dandelion & burdock And those other girls are just post mix lemonade" those last two lines are just superb.
Was it a millionaire who said "imagine no possessions" - Elvis. Other side of summer If Adolf Hitler flew in today, they,d send a limousine anyway - Clash. White man Heavens above, can this sticky stuff really be love. - Billy Bragg. Moving the goalposts Days of Dutch courage, just three French letters and a German sense of humour. He,s got a mind like a sewer and a heart like a fridge, he stands to be insulted and he pays for the privilege.-Elvis. Man out of time So you go and you stand on your own, and you leave on your own and you walk home and you cry and you want to die.- Smiths. How soon is now.
Shut up you talk too loud you dont fit in with the crowd i cant believe you exist i crossed you right off my list Motorhead- No class
My favourite Roses song and one of my all time favourite songs, this brings back so many good memories of the early nineties
Also, from Moving the Goalposts by the great Billy Bragg, anyone that can get Gennady Gerasimov into a song is a genius. "Once in a while, Gennady Gerasimov drops his smile"
"I'm just a notch in your bed post, but your just a line in a song" Sugar we're going down, Fall Out Boy
so many to choose from, impossible. I'll go with the one that's most relevant to me at the moment. (And I was listening to it earlier..) everybody seems to think I'm lazy, I don't mind, I think they're crazy. Running everywhere at such a speed, 'til they find there's no need. sums up my life
I had a word with Stanley, He said I'd come in handy, He started me on Monday, So I had a bath on Sunday (Squeeze) The eye receives the messages, And sends them to the brain. No guarantee the stimuli must be perceived the same When looking through Gary Gilmore's eyes. (The Adverts) I gave a love bite To a scrubber in the half light Pushed a squeaky pram Over to her Mam's (Leery Bleeder) God is a tender pervert and the angels are voyeurs Watching us forever, their vision never blurs They make us then forget us for a hundred million years And then by chance they glance at us and something in them stirs They find us so provocative, so weak, so full of pride Our cleverness, our nakedness, fills them with delight The way we hold our coffee cups, the way we pick our words God is a tender pervert and his angels His angels are voyeurs And when the tender pervert is too busy to admire us He sends his angels down to pass amongst us and desire us He gives them little notebooks where they note each quirk and boast Our foolish pride and pompousness turn him on the most When we're throwing temper tantrums When we're giving up the ghost The pervert keeps his distance But his angels, his angels move in close (Momus) Most things by the Kinks
