Good on the lad. The abuse he's had from Barnsley fans was the lowest of the low. Made me ashamed to be associated.
Was only one fan wasn't it? And I think that was only because f the stupid internet media as hardly anyone had heard it
Him joining Doncaster and not joining us had nothing to do with those comments made by one barnsley fan. He likes it at Donny, great relationship with their fans, hence why he joined. We weren't far off.
It was reported a Pikey taunted him about the tragedy on twitter, one of his own supporters. Don't tar everyone with the same brush.
It was a Leeds fan on Twitter who accused Barnsley fans of taunting Billy Sharp about his son, he was identified and apologised
I'm on about this http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...s-footballer-Billy-Sharp-baby-sons-death.html
Yeah the rumour was started on twitter by a Leeds fan, we got all the bad press. A Donny fan on twitter then spread it further etc, the same Donny fan who abused Sharp over his dead son when he left them for Southampton. It's a Shane that there can be no banter between us and Sharp now, I always saw him as a modern day Ronnie Moore, but if we sang anything like that now we'd be made to look like animals on twitter.
Could you tell me what you think that abuse was? I was at the Donny game in question. I was sat quite close to a group of Barnsley fans who spent the entire match on their feet singing. The songs were split about 50/50 between those in support of Barnsley and those baiting Donny. The majority baiting Donny were aimed at the fans to our right, a few were aimed at Billy Sharp, but not as many as I've heard directed towards him in the past. There were a few choice words amongst the songs and chants, I wouldn't sing them in front of my nan, but not a word, not a single word, was said about Billy Sharp's dead son. Not in a song, not in a chant, not a lone individual shouting abuse, nothing. If you looked towards the Barnsley end from the pitch, I was sat towards the left with me dad. Me brother was sat towards the right with his mates. When I got home and read about what we were accused of doing, I gave me brother a ring, but he'd heard nothing either. No one I spoke to over the next week had heard anything. I can't categorically state that there wasn't a single shout from someone during the match, it may have happened but none of us heard it, but I can 100% guarantee that there wasn't a song or a chant about the child that Billy Sharp lost. I know this because I was there in amongst our fans, along with a number of people I know very well who wouldn't lie to cover something like that up. If no one who was there could hear anything, how the hell did it get on Twitter without it being a complete fabrication? Barnsley fans didn't hear it, Billy Sharp didn't hear it, Donny fans didn't hear it, who heard it? It was a malicious rumour, started with the intention of discrediting our fans our club and our town, using a man's dead child to fuel it. Unfortunately, it worked, as it seems some of our own fans believe it.
I like Billy Sharp, good footballer and he can take the abuse and dish a bit back... proper footballer. If he chooses Donnie over us then so be it. It wouldn't stop me calling a fat so and so and asking about his mobile living arrangements. Also if he scores and slides towards us cupping his ears then that's great to me. If I can give it then I'm not going to be outraged if I get some back. I'm fed up with bland bland bland. I do think that there is a line, an unspoken level of common decency that unites people. It's unwritten but all right thinking folk know inherently when it has been crossed. I believe that the comments attributed to our fan were false. I refer to Jay's eloquent and studied post elsewhere in this thread which sums up the matter perfectly in my opinion.
Agree Dave, never had a problem with Sharp (or other players) giving a bit back when they get dogs abuse from the terraces, all part of it for me. As regards his late child - I wasn't at Donny, but Jay's relaying of the day, plus the fact that idiot on Twitter got found out leads me to believe that he didn't get anything at him over that, and I would sincerely hope he never has or does, that is beyond the pale. I don't doubt that somewhere there's some social inadequate who thinks it's fair game, and who knows one individual may have shouted something from the Barnsley end but I bet they soon got told what's what. Also plenty of fans of all clubs, Barnsley included posted condolences on his twitter feed. God forbid anyone has to go through what Billy Sharp and his wife had to. It's a pity that people like mrx in this thread cannot wait to jump on anything to try and put Barnsley folk down. They should perhaps look inwards a bit more to try and find out why the do that.
It was a load of fabricated old ********, but **** sticks. The way the press reported it, you had to go quite a long way to find anything that suggested it was all made up. I know I had mates who support other clubs contacting me about it, as they knew I'd been. So the story spread well enough. Question is, did Billy do the research to satisfy himself it wasn't true? I doubt it personally, and I suspect it will always affect his opinion of BFC. I don't think it matters in this case - us and Donny are in a similar boat right now, and he feels he owes Donny - but it's a real shame.
Jay, Dave and EN have covered my thoughts on it. I like Sharp but I wasn't that excited about getting him this time, he's not been great at this level in the last few seasons. If we're spending that much on a player's wage I would hope for better.
