Barnsley Chronicle and Matthew Murray: Answers Needed

On Friday the Chronicle, under Matthew's name indicated that discussions had taken place between the Jed McCrory Swindon syndicate and Patrick Cryne regarding an impliedly imminent takeover of Barnsley FC. This story appears to have been discounted by Radio Sheffield and also here:

I'm sure Matthew Murray reads this Board. At the very least, I am sure he is made aware of what is being said on it.

So as a BFC fan and ST holder, I would like Matthew to come on and verify whether there is any truth in the story he has written.

I note tonight that the Sports section of the Chronicle website is several days out of date, and a cursory glance seems to reveal nothing of Matthew's supposed scoop.

So is this mere invention? If there is no substance to this story, is there any point whatsoever in buying the Barnsley Chronicle?

easy answer to your final question - there has never been any point in buying such trash , negative for all the years I have read it , cannot even sell the town to the outside world in a positive light.

 

There's been a lot said on here about the chron, it's writers, it's integrity (or lack of), how it seeks and presents a story etc but this post makes a very simple, fair point:

The chron wrote a story that, to some degree, would affect all of us- a story that has been shot down. If I was them I would use my website to;

A. Stand up for my story and it's integrity

or

B. If not apologise then at least outline how and why it wrote the story in good faith.

Apologies if this post makes Matt Murray some kind of Tarn version of Bob Woodward or Carl Bernstein!!

 

He may not have to answer to the BBS but if letters are sent to the Chron's Sports Desk I'm sure an explanation would be submtted

I don't think there any big conspiracy he wrote a story that I presume he believes has some truth in it. Clearly not made up from the top of his head. So there's probably some truth in there somewhere.

 

If the Chronicle hAs a big story that no one else does they aren't going to suppress it.

 

It's too specific to have been made up. Maybe not as close as they suggested though. The club are bound to deny something they don't want to talk about yet.

 

I wouldn't expect the club to come out and confirm everything the Chronicle has said but what gets me is that surely if there was any truth in it then it would have been picked up by the national media, not even the Chronicle or Matthew Murray have said much about it since apart from standing by the story.

I expect next Friday's Chron to have zero reference to the story which looks to have been, at best, an unsubstantiated rumour that has been blown out of proportion.

I get the impression Mr Murray sees himself working for a national media outlet and may have seen this as an opportunity to get some recognition, however this isn't the first time he's done this (although it's probably the one that's got the most attention) so his credibility may already have been ruined.

It does seem a weird thing to fabricate, but the more you think about it a lie which is well within the realm of possibility is less likely to be scrutinised.

 

It's definitely too specific to be randomly made up. Whether it pans out that way is a different matter but there will be something in it. The club are so atrocious at PR they need all the friends they can get. Though this has improved recently.

 

I imagine that the story featured on the front and back page of a leading regional weekly paper has been completely made up.

 

Didn't the club spokesman say there is no deal imminent.Thats not denying the story.

 

Two things spring to mind......

1) The story is too specific with the naming of who's supposed to be trying to buy us and the time frame it might happen in.

2) Matthew Murray I very much doubt would put his reputation as a journalist on the line by making up lies.

Maybe it's true and maybe nothing will come of it. If nothing comes of it that doesn't mean Matt made up a lie to help shift more copies of the paper. Maybe it just means what he reported has fallen through. Lets see if there is a follow up story next friday.

 

I thought they had said that the club had not been approached by that person? Not that they had not been approached at all !!
Maybe this fella is part of a consortium and the negotiations are being done without his name, a bit like when Riddler acted as front man for Cryne ? You never know !!
