Can't believe Mellis isn't getting more criticism on here. As soon as I saw it at the time I said sending off. At the end if the day if both feet leave the ground then you give the ref the option to send you off, and it was obvious marinner was in that mood yesterday. Absolutely no need for him to go in like that...lost his head after we'd finally got it back to 10 v 10. We can all argue whether it's one foot, got the ball etc. but if that had been a Wednesday player I bet there'd be unanimous agreement it was a sending off. Mellis let himself down..full stop.

Agreed. Like I said in a previous post, Marriner couldn't wait to send him off.

Yes he does. Although he along hunt we're excellent yesterday. Both composed on the ball and looked for the pass unlike Dawson who once again was an absolute shambles in possession.

Penalty we've had them given for less this season - see Yeovil at home I thought there was enough contact myself.

Sending off for Mellus at the time I thought fair enough having steenbok is a perfectly good challenge though he goes in hard wins the ball and their bloke chests to get him sent off. I think we should definitely appeal. It's not too footed, he cleanly wins the ball and their plater is guilty of simulation/cheating.

It is remarkable that the referee got an absolute shagging on here yesterday but having watched the video this thread is full of different opinions on the key decisions and that is after the benefit of watching the incidents multiple times in slow motion - who'd be a referee? - hardest job in the world.

For me, all the key decisions are right.

Frimpong definitely did not get the ball for the second yellow, he took the players feet out sideways on, it is clear from the rear end view. He was a liability playing with so little control and needs fining.

The red for their player was obvious - horrible challenge that could easily have broken Shea's leg.

The penalty appeal was correctly turned down - no real contact at all. In these situations I always think you get to the right answer when you think whether you have been OK about it if it had been given the other way, and I know that we'd all have been f*cking hopping if it had.

Mellis's red, well, like another comment said, I can't believe he isn't getting more stick on here for that - completely lost his head and lead with one foot off the ground - whether he got the ball is immaterial, we all surely know that you can't do that these days, it is classed as dangerous play. Instead of having a go at the referee for having to make what seems like a correct decision, why aren't we having a go at the player for giving him the need to make the decision. It was a stupid stupid lunge and he deserved what he got.

Jimbo's dodgy pass - well I know he got it badly wrong, but to be honest I can't even see what he was trying to do.

Just another fecking horrible day at Hillsborough.

First time I've ever heard anything like that. We all know you can't jump in with two feet. We all know that if you do that there's a very good chance you'll be sent off whether you get the man, get the ball, miss everything, whatever. Rightly so, it's dangerous. This is the first time I've ever heard it suggested that you can't tackle with one foot.

I'm finding it very, very difficult to understand how anyone who has seen the replay still believes it's a red card. I understand why he got it and why people thought it was a sending off at the time, it all happened very fast, but not after seeing the other angle. It's a perfectly timed, robust, one footed challenge that wins the ball without touching the opposition. It's not a sending off, it's not a yellow card, it's not even a foul. It's a brilliant tackle.

Time and again Mellis is lambasted on here for having 'a heart like a pea'. He never puts a tackle in apparently. Then, when he does, when he shows some passion, when he puts in the best tackle I've seen this season, he's crucified for it. Meanwhile, a Sheffield Wednesday player feigns injury to help get him sent off and not a word is said about him.

It's no wonder Mellis was chuntering and swearing on his walk off the pitch. Personally, I'd have nutted someone.

    Re: Without being a Judas...

...and notwithstanding the fact I wasn't there and cannot comment on any other decisions made, I think the Ref got all those major decisions correct. Ping-pong gave the referee absolutely no choice. {Petulant and stupid)

Mellis penalty shout - he was already falling and whilst there was minimal contact he was by that stage not in control of the ball.

Mellis red card - It's alright saying the tackle was "perfectly timed". That might be the case but if it hadn't been then two feet off the floor and with the force he went in would have been a leg breaker. His lead foot was at least 6 inches above the ankle. Sorry but 30 years ago that may have been OK but with the modern laws and interpretation which (given they are supposed to be professionals) he should know, it was a clear sending off offence.

Sorry to disagree with those who say it wasn't a penalty but they would have been screaming for a red card if it had been the other way round I am sure.

Still think Mariner is a 'Showboater' though.

    Bang on Jay lad......bang on.

Andre Marriner was a disgrace. I could post all day about the stuff he missed......elbows, hand in face, diving (Frimpong first yellow card), feigning injury, playing excessive injury time, etc.

Doesn't change the fact that we lost, and again, get zero in our favour at Hillsborough.

I don't mind losing, it's part of sport, I just hate being on the end of sh!te refereeing.......especially in a Derby game.

I cannot see how any SWFC fan can take credit from that win......yes it's 3 points against a local rival, but come on, it was a against 10 men and was mightily lucky.

In my opinion, the referee had an exceptionally poor game, incredibly inconsistent with his decision making. I'm not blaming the referee for our defeat, but even had we drawn the game, Marriner put in a very poor performance. I'm not one for blaming referees for what are usually my own team's failings (Gary Willard being the obvious exception), but neither am I one for hiding from what I believe to be justified criticism. If you believe he got the major decisions correct, fine. I, on the other hand, don't.

Realised I had put one foot instead of two when it was too late to edit it!. Put my foot in it, so to speak! :)

He went in with both feet off the ground, all be it one was trailing behind, and his studs were showing. I usually agree with most of the stuff you post Jay but we'll have to agree to disagree on this one because I can't believe anyone thinks that's an acceptable challenge. It may have been 50 years ago, but you simply can't do that these days. If his timing had been a fraction of a section out he would have broke the guy's leg. His heckles were up and he was gunning for it - it was a loss of control and a nasty lunge. As soon as I saw it, I thought Red Card.

You keep saying 'if' he had mistimed it, but he didn't. Yes, if he had mistimed it, it would have a been a foul. That's like giving goals that don't go it, because if the keeper would have mistimed his dive and hadn't caught it, it would have gone in.

Agreed, but it wasn't, it was perfect. It's not against the laws of the game to go in hard. It's against the laws of the game to be dangerous, but a one footed challenge, which this was, isn't considered dangerous. If it is, we may as well shut down football right now. So, we've got to judge the tackle on whether or not he fouls the player or gets the ball and he gets the ball.

If we started sending off players for challenges that would be dangerous if they were mistimed then there'd be no one on the pitch at the end of the game because every challenge could cause injury if it is mistimed. We've got to judge the tackle on what it actually was, and this one was timed perfectly.

I agree that Mellis was angry, that he was pumped up, but I don't agree that he lost control. He channelled that emotional energy in to a perfectly timed tackle that won the ball. If he'd lost control the Wednesday player would have felt the tackle around his waist, as it was he wasn't touched as Jacob got the ball.

So did I mate. So did Danny Wilson, there's a great bit on the TV footage where he turns to Micky Mellon and says 'stupid', you can see him mouth it as clear as day. Paul Walker on the commentary did too. But then the reverse angle was shown and Paul, like myself, quickly changed his mind.

I understand why he got sent off, the ref only gets to see it once, but after seeing the replay I think it's a bad decision. And I do believe the ref was as influenced as much by the reaction of the Wednesday player, who was faking it, as he was by the speed of the tackle.

The point is, is that these days the element of danger in the tackle, being both feet off the ground and studs showing, is just not alllowed. I just can't see the scope for debate on this, you are just not allowed to do it. It doesn't matter whether he got the ball or not. In the context of how the laws are applied these days, it was an obvious red card. We see incidents like that every week on the telly result in red cards. You can't tackle with your studs up and both feet off the ground.

Opinions eh. Just like arseholes, we've all got one. I understand what you are saying, honest I do. I just think it that it looked like a dangerous tackle and I thought the ref called it right. At the very least, if you thought 'Red Card' when you first saw it, it is hard to be critical of the ref when he thought the same. He only gets one opportunity to call it, just like we all do.

But both feet are off the ground - it was a lunge.

We'll not change each other opinions I think. Opinions are what make the game, so to speak.

We could go on all day, but I think I should go and do some stuff with the day. Off to the tip! :)
