just noticed Man City game has been postponed because of the wind - now any of you old sods from the 60's and 70's remember if games used to be called off back then when the wind got up?

A home game against Rotherham United during the Christmas period 1974 was postponed due to high winds.

It's usually the winds down at ground level that are the problem for football matches.

During the 60s and 70s, clubs and councils didn't have to worry about, where there's blame there's a claim, shitehawks..

We drew the rearranged game 1-1, but I can't remember our scorer. Rotherham won promotion at the end of that season.

That Rotherham postponement was the first ever for high winds (if I remember correctly)

Can't remember any postponements but I do remember a game against Sunderland when Malcolm Shotton scored with a wind-assisted volley from 275 yards.

I was in East Stand upper with a friend, and the stand was moving about as the wind blew. The guy next to my friend was scared stiff. He turned to my friend and said "I'd like to get my hands on the bloody architect who designed this stand".

Little did he know that my friend actually WAS the architect who designed the stand. He politely explained that it was supposed to move about under wind load as otherwise something would have to give. The bloke wasn't convinced, however, and left.

Remember that night very well. I was seated in the East Stand Upper, and the rows of seats were swaying due to the strong wind. Loud bangs were coming from the steel support structures in the roof, and Stewards were anxiously inspecting the top of the stand. Many spectators did leave due to concern for their safety.
