The 5 worst things about relegation to League 1

1. Our squad will be decimated. Loan players all gone never to be seen again, O Grady will have to be sold to go some way to make up the £1.5 million shortfall in income, expect Doncaster Rovers to come in with a bid around £300k. Praying that there is no clause in his contract, wouldn't surprise me though. Likes of Jennings, Mellis, Craine, Steele will have options to leave, we'll be starting the season with a rookie goalie, Danny Rose and Paul Digby, nailed on.

2. Standard and style of football is dreadful. Success in League 1 requires any semblance of football to be removed, organised at the back, battlers in midfield and get the ball into the box quick from anywhere on the pitch, could argue we are ideally set up for that at the moment, but neck braces at the ready.

3. Attendances will plummet. We might be poorly attended by Championship standards but we'll be decidedly average for League 1 upon relegation. 300 quid to watch the above, we'll struggle to sell 5,000 season tickets. The away end will be like the Gohbi desert most home matches as well. Atmos - mostly poisonous as there will be a strong contingent expecting us to blow everyone away from day 1 and when it doesn't happen, the booing will be a regular feature.

4. Income massively reduced which means wage bill reduced which means the calibre of player available to us is reduced. Not many decent Championship players are prepared to drop down, doubt we'll be seeing many Prem loans again and with the wages we can offer, the other Yorkshire teams in the Championship will be able to out bid us. League 1 is a graveyard and most agents will tell their clients as such.

5. Ignored by the media, miniscule covered on SKY, BBC etc, but maybe now we'll have to qualify for the FA Cup (not to mention entry into Johnstones Paint Trophy), there is a chance that we might get a trip to a non league club and be seen as a potential giant killing (for our first season down their at least).

Worryingly if Rotherham and Chesterfield both get promoted this season (good chance of it happening) next season we could end up being in the lowest league position of all six Radio Sheffield sides.

As there seems to be a lack of it here I thought I'd offer a definition.

Relegation will be ***** but we will carry on.

I've consistently said to anyone who would listen, that if we end up back in the alehouse league I'll not be watching. Problem is, I've mostly hated life in the Championship. Watching my club struggle, year after year, with insufficient resources to compete in a division that has been completely distorted by parachute payments and chancers willing to throw money around (that they usually don't have) in pursuit of the Premier League 'dream' is not my idea of fun. I guess I'll still be there next season though.

 

Pretty much this for me though I'd watch us whatever league we were in.

 

Or not many of those things will happen who knows what the future will bring. Except Russell Grant obviously.

It will hopefully mean we start to see our team win games on a consistent basis
It gives us a chance to bring through our own youth players and fully benefit from all the investment in the academy
No more (or Less) Loanees who couldn't give a **** about our club
Cheaper Tickets
No longer being referred to as Minnows, Lowly the licks of

 

Should we go down, and I say SHOULD because it it not all over yet. Keep The Faith, would it not be safe to assume we would be one of the better clubs in League 1 and be one of those teams to be challenging for promotion. TBH a Barnsley team at or near the top of any division would IMO draw on a bigger support as everyone likes a winner no matter what league you may be in.

Anyway it really shouldn't matter to anyone. A supporter of a club is just that. You support your team through thick and thin. That is what we do.
If you want to watch a winning team week in week out buy a Chelsea or Man C top and go watch them. Doubt very much if you'd enjoy yourself quite as much. Very little or no passion in those clubs.
We are Barnsley be proud of that. Our recent form although very disappointing won't stop me supporting Barnsley and making, when I can, the occasional visit to lend my support to the team.

1. Instead of being a small fish in a big pond we'll be a big fish in a small pond, only the likes of the Blunts (Could be relegated) or Wolves (could be promoted) are likely to get bigger attendances.

2. Some of the younger lads are ready for promotion to the first team but can't get in because of all these loanees. We came out of Div 1 with the likes of Austin, Kaye, Wroe, Williams, Flinders etc getting regular games. I'd like to see Digby, Rose, RNL etc getting more starts

3. Be nice to see us win the occasional game rather than go down to Oakwell out of habit. The standard of football in this league is not all its cracked up to be. Most matches I've seen this year have been garbage with only Paddy McCourt lightening up drab games.

4. We should be setting up to win games rather than "not lose" should be a better watch

5. In terms of operating profit, we'll be one of the richest in the league so should be able to pay decent 1st Division wages.

 

I can't catch my breath. Brilliant. It takes an 'outsider' (I say that loosely) to come on here and be an adopted Reds fan and show more heart than half the mongs on this forum who were born and bred here.

Championship: Year on year struggle in a league that has been ruined by Sky.
League one: Ale house league, dreadful football but at least we can compete.

I hate Sky and everything it has done to football.

I agree with what you're saying, Ian old mate. I just think people are hurting and, possibly but not in every case, saying things they don't mean. Feelings are obviously very raw at the moment and emotions are running high, just as you'd expect them to be from passionate football fans. If that hurt and anger can be channelled properly on a match day, it could give the players that extra few percent needed to grind out three points instead of one & draws from potential defeats.

 

Kev you know me, and being a Dundee United supporter I've had my share of heartbreaking times following my team but once the disappointment of Cup Final defeats and once in 1995 relegation, has gone you still turn up and support "YOUR" team.

League 1 is where we belong these days, we don't have the necessary ambition to compete in the championship
