The thing was with all standing and big crowds, was that if you werent there for 2.15pm you didnt get a stanchion to lean on and if you werent there for 2.45pm you were lucky to find a step where there wasnt someone on the immediate step below blocking your view, so consequently the atmosphere got going early and by 3pm the place was really bubbling.

You also didnt have the internet, so the only info you got was through the chronicle/programme/star which was generally positive stuff and usually most folks at oakwell were in positive frames of minds (most of the time) and the atmosphere at oakwell benefited as a result.

It was his home debut. His actual debut came the week before in the 2-1 win at a Kevin Keegan led Newcastle.
The 4-4 draw with Stockport generated a great deal of anger from parts of the crowd towards John Saunders (unfairly, in my opinion) and his inability to mark Less Bradd, who scored a hat trick in the last ten minutes.

Stoke replay in cup 89? Was pretty amazing . Think it was a night time game.

Also blunts and Oldham home in promotion season ..and...spurs in prem.

Grimsby home. Our first promotion after more than 10 years. The first for me anyway.

Allen Clarke started a new period for the club & this was a fabulous moment.

All the others been mentioned I think... beating Chelsea 4-0, Man Utd 3-2, Chelsea again 1-0, Hudds 7-1, and the Liverpool match in the prem when we were robbed by a cheating referee. Atmosphere at that you could cut like a knife, as we played Liverpool off the park with 9 men.

All happy memories. Oh, for just one moment like that now.... that's why I'm a reds fan though... there had been 5 years of Jim Iley for me before Clarke came.
Iley wasn't a bad manager, just all his best players were sold as soon as any type of offer came in.

Missed most of the 'glory days' so for me the best atmosphere i've seen was Chelsea at home in the cup.

Hull last season was alright, Ponty in good voice.

Doesn't happen often enough at all.

It's a shame because there can be a reyt atmosphere in Oakwell.

I really liked the Leeds 5-2 game.

The relegation party at Bumhole Lane.

Night matches in the 80's when the Ponty rocked & swayed under the lights were special. Remember 3-2 v Cardiff in the League Cup in 80/81, we let a 2 goal lead slip only for Banksy to let rip in stoppage time, it was carnage in the Ponty.
Previously mentioned promotion games (Grimsby in '79 & Rotherham in '81) were amazing, and Sheff Wed in 81 when we had 28,000 for a league game. Won 1-0 and the noise was deafening.

Chelsea in the cup was pretty good.
In the words of John Motson "15 thousand Barnsley fans making the noise of 50 thousand Barnsley fans"
