I'd like to see carpets and puffy cushions in the concourses. With maybe an area set aside for meditation, aroma-therapy and the like.

MK are not a great example though are they. Never find the Franchise FC argument, they are just not in a hotbed of football area. They will never get great crowds so their (half finished) stadium will always be just that. Looks fantastic from the outside but still empty inside.

To be honest we might never need to build our ground up. The one we have is too big for purpose and is likely to be so for some considerable time. Seeing it with 17 or 18 thousand once or twice a season (ie with the away end packed to the rafters) does not compensate for all those banks and banks of empty seats the rest of the time. I know that improving things on the pitch has to come first but I was just putting in my opinion just in case a new ground was contemplated. It would be a wrench never to go to a ground again that I first went inside 52 years ago but there are worse things to worry about.

MK Dons aren't a good example from a football club point of view but I think their stadium is a really good example of how to do it if you're going to do it. I also don't really see a problem with having lots of empty seats, I think the problem from an asthetic point of view is leaving them empty. The club had a huge banner from wembley and another huge one from cardiff yet despite promises from the board at the time they have been hidden away when they should be stretched out over the seats of the west stand that is closed. The other thing I'd do is I'd work out roughly how many away fans are needed on most days and if it is below say 3000 I'd be getting an advertisor to pay and have a huge banner made to basically fill the other 3000 seats of the north stand with one big ad for somebody. If the pitchside boards are worth 2k a year than one covering most of a stand must be worth a fortune to the club

Re: Gives us all we need?

What about fans that are not lapsed and those that are already interested?
What about the real issues such as having to catch 2 buses to an out-of town stadium, thinking of not least of all the elderly and people with varying degrees of disabilities that rely heavilly on Public transport.
The extra expense of travelling for people on limited budgets.

Really think an out-of town stadium would be a big mistake.

Ground share with Wakey Wildcats at Durkar ,and Yorkshire Cricket Club moving there as well, perhaps with a Hooters next to it and a Weatherspoons........

I would just knock down the west stand, three stands are enough.

last time I went to Bolton it was horrendous, 1 road in 1 road out. Right adjacent the M61 as well .No thanks give me the surroundings of Oakwell everytime.

Re: well I have heard of two reasonable places to re-locate to

Good God if we left Oakwell to move to a soulless new flatpack stadium with 8k less seats I really would despair.

    This.

If we're doing well in this division, we'd be averaging over 15,000, with the odd full house.

Get to the Premier League, we'd have to split the away end in half to accommodate more home fans, like we did in 1999-2000 when we were flying in the top six.

    Nowt wrong with Oakwell.

Yes, I'd like a proper quality scoreboard. I'd also accept a renovated West Stand at some point, although personally, I'd like the lower tier seating ripped out and terracing/rail seating installed. Just stick a new roof/cladding etc on the old girl, same material/colour as the other three stands. Just keep the bogs as they are. And fill in the other two corners.
I've never liked the entrance tunnel since it was moved. I'd extend the pull out tunnel so it reaches and bends round onto halfway. Much prefer our lads to come out there than directly next to the away supporters.

All sorts of other little things could be added. Statues perhaps of former players etc. Maybe renaming the stands?

It would be much cheaper, and much more sensible to improve our current stadium in ways such as this, little bits at a time, than bulldozing it all and building another 15,000 identikit stadium like the small Yorkshire clubs have done. They've no soul. All look the same. But of course their fans were happy to move into them. Saltergate, Millmoor/Don Valley and Belle Vue were ******* tripe, and all three clubs I refer to are ***** with piss poor history.
Oakwell, Barnsley FC, we're a bit better than that.

I've been to Middlesbrough a few times this season. It's one of the better 'modern' stadiums over here. I like the Reebok as well, it's quite unique in appearance. But trust me, sitting in the upper tier of the Riverside with just 14,000 supporters in it is a depressing affair, very ******* cold and just like Bolton's present gates it proves Worsbrough Red's point (and mine) that it's what happens on the field that counts towards fan attendance/apathy.

Let's see how Rotherham's gates look if they don't get promoted this season. My opinion is that they'll flatline, as Donny's did after a couple of years before tumbling back to their historical average. I'm referring to those clubs because they're local to us, share our economic issues and are close in terms of current on field performance.
No point quoting Brighton, Man City, Cardiff, Arsenal etc. Huge populations, big clubs, rich owners, different economic climate.

You Oakwell Til I Die Reds.

    absolutely agree ST

also if they could use some of the ground over beyond the away end into car parking for away fans... and a road into the Retail park on Harbro hill... to let them get away ... that would ease traffic flow in and out... also it would allow the police to escort away fans back to the motorway too relatively easily.

Everybody hurry up, discuss all the options and eventualities, come full circle and realise the football ground was situated in the perfect place all along.

Exactly Whitey. You wrote what I didn't have the time to write.

All about how we do on the field. If we were beating teams week in, week out and at the top we'd be easily getting 15,000. Nowt to do with a new stadium.

Oakwell is a reyt stadium. I love it.

For those quoting the rotherham example, be careful what you wish for..

Bearing in mind they are watching league one football, the cost of season and match day tickets are more than ours, and the concession list is considerably less.

Oh and dont get me started on the price of a pint.

If you want a new ground, be prepared to pay for it

Finally, someone talks sense. Hopefully the on field events will take a turn for the better soon. Hopefully this season.

Re: Apart from the fact that the facilities are terrible

So you're saying the new ground would be out of date in 25 years time & would have to be knocked down & rebuilt?
