However, in my opinion, the problem in the 60s and early seventies was stagnation and failure to compete even at that level. At that point we punched below our weight. If we are competing with clubs with a similar financial foundation we have to win! No excuses! Thus may lead to us being the Baggies one league down, but at least we win as many as we lose.

I remember year after year and nothing happened, no promise, no excitement. If we go to div 1 and I don't think there's much option for us, we have to boss it.

Arguably we've stagnated since returning to the Championship. The aim each season seems to have been to finish one place above the relegation places. The only manager we've had who seemed to challenge that mindset was shown the exit door. It was interesting to hear an interview with him just before the game at the John Smiths Stadium when he spoke of the five year plan that Huddersfield Town had to reach the Premier Division.

That's what we need. How are they financing it?

    1) rich and giving benefactor, or
    2) chancer chairman playing Russian roulette with god clubs future?

It's not about coming back stronger. It's finding a level you are financially comfortable with and stabilising at that level. Currently I would say that's about 8-10 in League 1. From that point you can have an occasional flirtation with the play offs and in bad years with relegation. Where we were in Division 1 from the mid 80s to mid 90s. Some of the teams over spending will probably go out of business at some point so things may change. The era you are talking about from my understanding we were underachieving and performing below expectations hence the disillusionment.

Precisely so, people list interest because of a combination of lack of ambition to win things, shortage of funds, and poor players. We were a joke and as a result people didn't come. There's a world of difference between that and being a vibrant competitor. After all, can anybody really say we've competed since we came back up? And since then, year on year it seems to have become harder. This is not just about Barnsley, although I obviously care more for the reds than anybody else, it's about the way the game is run and how having all the money in the top tier sucks in clubs to spending more than they can afford. It's not sustainable for us and not for a lot of clubs who think they are bigger than us.
