WHATEVER fate lies in store for Barnsley from now until the end of the season, it is abundantly clear their squad must undergo a significant overhaul this summer. With the majority of the players out of contract, Danny Wilson will effectively be left with a blank canvas to create a masterpiece whatever league they may reside in next season. Whether they are relegated or not, he deserves our time and the opportunity to build a team which he can call his own, not one largely built by two of his predecessors. The remains of Keith Hill and David Flitcroft's reigns are still here and Wilson, by and large, has had to work with what was left when he took over in December. Having to work with somebody else's players is difficult because there may be loyalties which lay elsewhere and it's an even greater challenge when bottom of the league. The players Wilson has been able to sign have merely been short-term fixes for long-term problems which were not of his own doing. Naturally, when any new manager comes in, he wants to stamp his authority on the team, but he has not really had the chance to do so. Some Barnsley fans don't want to afford him that, however, because they have been infected by the virus of instant gratification so prevalent in today's game. Expectation will always be high at Oakwell because history shows us the high standards this club has come to command. But nobody can really expect Wilson to solve the problems he inherited in the space of one transfer window and the loan market. Unfortunately, he has suffered greatly from Flitcroft's transfer policy that was, being polite, misguided at best. You have to sympathise with Ben Mansford who clearly backed him to the hilt and left him to spend the money where he deemed fit. But just because you walk into a casino with £100,000 doesn't mean you are going to come out with £1m and the expensive gambles which Flitcroft took have backfired. When you take all this into account, expecting Wilson to correct all those failings in the space of three months is unfair on a man clearly desperate to succeed. Wilson needs time to build his own team and enforce his philosophies which are not built in five minutes. He needs to be given the chance to bring in strong mentalities and leaders because he has had a distinct lack of them in his tenure, which has underpinned Barnsley's demise this season. To not give him that opportunity would be doing him disservice given the circumstances in which he took over. For some Barnsley fans, the alternative option of course would be to look for Barnsley's 18th manager in 15 years, but the same problems would remain. At least in Wilson they have somebody who cares about the club. If that's not worth our patience then nothing is. It was a bloke called Leigh Curtis writing for the Nottingham Post about Shaun Derry at Notts County. I just changed the names. I thought it fitted us perfectly. Thanks to WSB
A compelling and eloquent argument for retaining Danny which I what I would hope the powers that be at Oakwell do at the end of the season.
thankyou for that Jay. I hope we keep Mr Wilson personally. Maybe in some respects I look back at hiss previous term here and maybe that colours my judgement. But I believe with a blank canvass as the text says, then he could at least stabilize us into a decent team again. I pray we stay up this term, but do not fear the drop either.... Christ I have followed them since 1960 and had misery and wonderment in about equal measures. I do not crave much from the team, all I ask is that all put in a 100% shift... if then we win or lose it matters not, but I will always applaud if the shift is indeed put in. Is that too much to ask ?
Re: thankyou for that Jay. Quality, that. Well played. From every little tit bit I can gather, he won't be our manager next season if we're in League One. I can only - at this stage - guess the reasons why. But if it was my decision, he'd be given a three year (minimum) contract now. Take the pressure off him. I think we'd see a very different BFC and very different Danny if that were the case. We need a quality manager to either rebuild in the second tier, or rebuild in the third. Can you tell me a better candidate?
absolutely not some on here are writing him off, they have not really looked at his career both as a player and a manager. I for one think he is one of the best that Barnsley could attract.
Re: absolutely not We need to make it known to the club that the majority of us want Danny whatever division we're in next season.
Re: thankyou for that Jay. I'd love to understand their thinking on that. I very much doubt there will be much pressure to get rid of him from the fan base, as most fully understand the situation he inherited, so I've got to presume its either financial or that they have got alex ferguson lined up to take over. Ben Mansford better get his tin hat on and his reasoning lined up for when he makes that announcement.
Re: thankyou for that Jay. If Danny is only here until the end of the season his appointment can only be seen as an act of appeasement and I would hope BFC don't work like that.Like everyone else I don't know what agreement the board and manager have but I would fully expect Danny Wilson being in charge next season irrespective of which league we're in.
Granted he inherited a poor team but Wilson has shown nothing to inspire me with his man management and tactics since his appointment. Not for me. The club needs a complete overhaul.
Re: absolutely not Agree 100% with that Whitey. Sadly, I think the runes suggest it will be Micky and his Melons - that's why he was kept on. If so, I hope we still have a club in five years time - but I doubt it.
It fits if you believe in the unbending philosophy that anyone who takes over a team other than during the close season has no room to do anything other than take them down to the next division. Seems to me also that alot of the stuff you have changed to fit does not fit us. There's a fair bit you left out of the original article. Putin! But if you want to chuck your lot in with Danny irrespective of keeping your eyes fixed on the evidence before you, it's a propoganda job well done. In Barnsley's case time will tell as to what turned out to be wrong. We rarely see owt turning out to be right. Your colours are pinned to the mast.
Agreed. I would lose the one remaining ounce of respect I have for the "board" if they don't keep him on. In fact I would probably start protesting that they fooked right off!!!!
I haven't changed anything, other than names and a couple of dates. The stuff I left out was about specific players that Notts County had signed. As for all this propaganda stuff you're spouting, I'm supporting the current manager of Barnsley FC. You ought to give it a go. How you can twist that to make out I'm doing something wrong and in some way treacherous is simply beyond me.
Supporting the manager who has only been here 5 minutes tsk tsk that will never do. Let's get another lower league 'Mourinho' and continue the conveyor belt. Shame on you mr Jay shame.
You are following your own agenda. Which is fair enough. i do not believe the same length of rope would have been handed out by you to Mellon for example at this time (though I hold no candle for him). Or maybe a new appointment altogether, if things were going as they are. I believe that many are blinded by past glory. I support the team, not the manager. Hence the propoganda angle. You are advocating Wilson for next season. I am sticking to the view that if we do not survive, then his chance should go. That's a diference of opinion. There are other points to be made here: 1. Nobody bleated at Flicker's retention of players policy during the close season. Or did you? 2. Flicker took over around the same time as Danny, a season ago. Do you wanna argue that his team showed less fight than they are doing now? Do you want to bet that Danny's team will get more points in the same period? Do you want to argue that it is going to take more points than last season to be able to survive? 3. As an aside, everyone eulogised Mansford's appointment. And Watkins. Perhaps it can be put in context - they have had no discernible positive effect. And Don Rowing looks a genius now - except that he was just lucky. 4. Have you read other Leigh Curtis posts? Talk about writing in (Gael) cliches.................You need to have trawled a few barren oceans before he becomes the catch that you feed any Wilsonettes on. You are not doing anything wrong in pushing your agenda, any more than I am arguing against it.
Apparently I've pinned my colours to the mast. He's damn right about that. They're red. Barnsley's colours. I'd be interested to know what his are. Getting a bit sick of having to justify supporting the manager as though it's a crime. I went through it in the Autumn when I continued to back Flitcroft. I didn't expect to have to do it again only 3 months in to the new manager's reign. I wouldn't give you tuppence for some of our fans.
