I remember thinking he was absolutely useless at the time, but I've been miserable as a Reds fan pretty much since he got the chop (barring a few short spells under Robins, Hill and Flicker)

Maybe he really did know what he was doing?

.....nah. Just remembered how much money he had to spend. Imagine any of the other managers with that cash!

You mean the cash he earned by getting us to an FA Cup semi final? As a person he wasn't likeable but he did.....

    1) Get us to Wembley.
    2) Keep us up three years in a row.
    3) Do an alright job when you consider he was an academy coach and guys with much more managerial experience than him have done worse for us.
    4) Become our longest serving manager since being back in this league.
    5) Give us players like Muller, De Silva and Ferenczi to watch.

Hill, Flitcroft and Wilson have made Simon Davey look like Sir Alex

    Fact.

Team that got promotion from Div1 were quite decent but we've only done enough to stay in the Division . Andy Ritchie not done alot since he left after being dissatisfied with the budget ofered.

No they haven't. Hill made him look likeable and Flitcroft made him look sane but that’s about it.

True about the cup money - pretty sure he spent a fair wedge before that though. Mostto, Christensen, JCR spring to mind
Always thought he had a good eye for a player - did he have a really good scout or what?
Not sure having kept us up goes down as an achievement when he actually had a fair bit of money to spend. Could have been so much more.
Remember the squad fondly though - a lot of the players of the last 3 years will be forgotten very quickly.

The squad at the minute bears a resemblance to Hill's team after it got torn apart in January. Lots of loan players who I barely even recognise. Not quite as extreme though.

My favourite times since we came back up and the best team we've had were all under Davey.

Probably, although the couple of moths up to Christmas in Hill's first season and the great escape under Flitcroft were as good if not better. We were the most consistent over a season under Robins, never troubling the relegation dog fight.

It's difficult to judge, because Davey had stacks more money to spend. SM will tell you it's because he took us to Wembley, and that's part of it, but it's far from the whole story. He was spending long before the cup run and a lot of that was straight out of Patrick Cryne's pocket. Cryne severely cut back on that after we dispensed with Davey, rightly so in my opinion.

Can you give more details on that? Can't remember that happening. It was Robins who was dissatisfied with the budget.

£1.2 million on Iain Hume. Over 80 appearances for Special K.

You can trace certain loss of interest to him going though.

Did he have more than Flicker though for instance? I know Robins has a reduced budget but how did what he had compare?

How much money did Flicker actually spend? It's difficult for any of us to compare the wage budget, because we simply don't know, but quoted transfer fees tend to be close if not entirely accurate. Flicker bought Jennings, was there anyone else?

First two that come to mind for Davey are £1.2 million for Hume and £400,000 for Mostto. Didn't we even spend money on Kim Christensen? I know we did on Dwayne Mattis. Kayode Odejayi cost us £200,000, for four league goals.

    O'Grady.

    Hill paid money for Dawson/Golbourne/McNulty/Done/Wiseman

Davey paid for Muller & JCR, too. Don't forget Foster either.

50k on Mattis wasn't it (Jesus Christ what was he thinking?), seem to remember 150k for Christensen.

I agree with all your saying I was just meaning to pure enjoyment of watching the mighty reds not the ins and outs of management. All the others have given me moments though I found the Robins era a little one dimensional (god knows I'd settle for it now). I think Davey gave us some memories and players (good and bad) we will remember for a long time.

Proper bellend who was clueless in so many ways. Lucky that Cryne was still delving into his own pocket back then. Did well in recruiting a good few players that I enjoyed watching, but brought in a lot of ***** as well. Was manager during 'that' cup run, and what a joyous run that was. But in terms of bread and butter - the league - he was ******* gash.

Another wrong horse that Cryne backed.
