Do you think the side that went down in 2002 were worse than the current shower that will intimately take us down?

It's a genuine question. I was away at uni most of this and the previous 2 seasons, so didn't see that many games, in fact all the ones I went to in and around London we lost.

    2001/2002

    Played 46
    Wins 11
    Draws 15
    Losses 20
    Goals for 59
    Goals Against 86
    Goal Diff-27
    Points 48

Versus our current lot: (With 10 games left to play...)

    2013/2014

    Played 36
    Wins 6
    Draws 11
    Losses 19
    Goals for 31
    Goals Against 62
    Goal Diff -32
    Points 29

I know the league is probably a better standard, so it's difficult to compare 12 years down the line. But on the stats it looks like our current crop of superstars are worse than the 2001/2002 side.

    Not that we're down yet . . . obviously.

some interesting stats there. as you say, difficult to compare, all things are relative. but for me, this is probably my worst season as a barnsley fan. from the highs and expectations at the start of the season, to this. hard to stomach.

We as Barnsley fans know the highs are short lived nowadays.

What surprised me was the goals for and against.

We scored 59 goals and conceded 86?!?!?!

Don't think we'll be far off will the goals conceded column at the end of the season with some of the fixtures we have left. Can see us getting a few tonkings between now and the end of the season. Burnley at home, Brighton at home, QPR at home, Leeds at home, who're due a win against us to be fair. We also have to go to Derby, after watching them yesterday that's frightening!!!

Interesting comparison. My memories of the 2002 side were very negative and I struggle to think of the current crop as worse, but on reflection, they're probably as bad. Both sides had a total lack of fight which is the worst thing. The division has got better since then mind, so a fair comparison is difficult. I remember that Norwich game very well, was quite young at the time and didn't quite grasp all that was going on around me. Hopefully I won't have a reminder come late April/May.

I'm quite fortunate that I wasn't actually at the game the last twice we were relegated (97/98 & 01/02)

Just remember being sat in the Herts uni bar watching Soccer Saturday with a couple of mates; One was an Ipswich fan, who beat us in the play offs a couple of years before, and the other a Blunts fan who was loving it.

Went home and sulked for a couple of days.

Dawson is a far better player than Jones , other two very similar .

I was only 12 at the time in 2002 and was only my second season as a reds fan so i've only really known struggle and defeat and i can't remember much about the season we went down just the players. The team that were relegated in 2002 though, were they just not good enough to compete but put in effort in comparison to what we have now which in my opinion at least is a team that is good enough to be a average championship team and is made up of players that have the ability but lack some bottle, a little fight and desire.

I thought when we signed him he looked great going forward, then realised his shooting was terrible and he was quite often way out of position . I am not saying Dawson is a great player , but I would take him over Jones every single day of the year.
But I would rather have someone else completely !

Even if we stay up, we'll not get 48 points.

Who did I rate from that the 2001/02 side? Morgan, Dyer, Barker, but Parkin had replaced him in the team with Gibbs, the mentalist. Barnard was past his best and we let him go at the end of the season, or he didn't want to sign. Chettle was completely past it. Some rated Sheron, but I didn't. Gorre played some good games in the league below but produced very little while we were still in the Championship. The rest? Someone pass me a gun.

The current squad? Steele, Hassell, but he's always injured and it's hard to judge if he's still got it because we never see him, Ramage, but he's not ours, Cranie, O'Brien for his effort alone and occasional skill, Jennings and O'Grady. Then there's McCourt, who I love, but I don't know if he could be accommodated in a successful side. The rest - somewhere between meh and the gun again.

Dunno which team is worse to be honest. I do know neither team is better because they're not worth the description.

I disagree. Both are bang average. But I'd take Jones, just.

Really? I wouldn't. I'm no big fan of Dawson, but at least I've seen him have a number of good games as well as the bad ones. I saw Jones have one, his debut when we beat Wednesday 3-0. Apart from that I thought he looked miles out of his depth, even in the league below.

If I had a choice I'd have none of the above, but if I was forced to take one of them it would be Dawson, with bells on.

No problem with that. But Jones has had the better career. I reckon if you asked supporters of League One and Two clubs which they'd prefer the answer would be Jones. I saw more than just one good game in his time here. Pompey away springs to mind. So there's two. :D

But seriously, I'm well disappointed in Dawson. He looks like a really average player this season. The Dawson I liked, the one pre-injury last season, that lad could also play a bit, as well as give 100%. But yesterday, once or twice he didn't even track his man in midfield, allowed them a free run. I noticed Perkins started doing this prior to him being moved on. Maybe the injury has affected him? Because I used to tell everyone he was more than a toiler. But this season, toil is about all he offers.

But comparing him and Jones is like comparing earache and toothache.

After we were relegated last time I never thought I'd see another Barnsley team so devoid of heart, passion, fight, pride and determination. I hadn't until this season and in my humble opinion this team is weaker, not worse in terms of quality but more lacking in the qualities already listed.

suffered 4 relegations following the reds 64/65 can barely remember. but 71/2 was well dissapointed as a teenager.97/8 was very dissapointed but proud as hell and still revered the players .2001/2 wanted to invade the pitch and tell players personally what i thought but managed to restrain myself and shouted a few choice words instead. if some of these players attitudes and indifference to the fans who currently pay their very generous wages continues and i end up suffering a fifth they can get ready al tell thi
