Lovely hospitality in the Reading box, nice meal and free wine and what a ****ing performance. Better go back to being a grown up now. Will do a sorta report tomorrow if anyone is interested. Even Big Jean played like a proper championship player!!!!
Lets hope its the start of the run that we desperately need. I've been trying to watch a film with the missus, but with one eye on the ipad. Typical that even after a victory like this we can have the joy of Leicester's goal immediately wiped out by ruddy Charlton. If we can string a few wins together it won't matter though. Big game on Saturday, followed by two home games. They do like to make us sweat at this time of year!
Supporting Barnsley I try not to get carried away with our victories or our defeats but I'm still high as a kite after last night. We played the way I've been hoping to see since Danny came back with real pace and attacking intent, high intensity and no little skill. Shows what I know when I saw the team sheet I feared the worst couldn't fathom what possible winning formation we were going to construct our of that team. In terms of formation it seemed a fairly fluid one but based around 4-4-2 first half and a more flexible 4-4-1-1 second half. Reading were incredibly disappointing, playing like we have all too often this season, one paced little ideas or inspiration going forward and porous at the back. In fact they gave a typical Barnsley performance while we looked more like play off contenders. We set off very well looking far more dangerous in an attacking sense than we have recently. It appeared that whatever dark cloud had been hovering above our heads in recent weeks had gone and that our first thought was to win the game rather than contain the opposition. We took advantage of distraction in the Reading defence to take the lead an excellent team goal scored by Dawson. Never going to be my favourite player Dawson but he had a good all round game in addition to his goal he made some good interceptions and even controlled the ball first time occasionally. Reading then scored against the run of play really as Etuhu made his only mistake of the evening to give away a fairly obvious Penalty. I have to be honest and say I thought at this stage we would go to pieces and undo all our earlier work. Instead we traded blows for the rest of the half seemingly having more shots than we have had all month. Second half on came RNL and within 10 minutes he scored an absolute beauty. In the past he has come into the team and made similar impacts then gone missing again. Hopefully this time he is ready to make the impact his undoubtedly ability implies he can. He linked well with Jennings and O'Grady throughout and all three looked threatening as we attacked with pace. Jennings then hit a beauty showing a glimpse of the player we gave on our hands if he can harness his natural talents to produce an end product to his often excellent approach play. Again I expected us to sit back and invite pressure as it's become almost our default position but again we gave Reading as good as we got. Steele made one excellent save but other than that we had a pretty untroubled last 30 minutes. Special mention to M'Voto and Nyatanga a centre back pairing I'd previously thought of as the Spongebob Squarepants of football being yellow and porous they were both excellent and pretty much untroubled throughout with big Jean being particularly excellent. in reality a good well organised team performance so unfair to pick any individuals out. its easy to get carried away with one performance and in all probability we will still get relegated. Last night did however hint at a brighter future under Danny if we can harness the skill and spirit displayed more frequently. On a side note I've never really been a fan of the posh seats whenever I've sat in them. As my nan would say they tend to be full of people who are all fur coat no knickers and I can be a bit of a sweary Mary at matches. They also seem devoid of any real passion it seems more like watching footy on tele than in the flesh so ******* typical that's where I watched from last night (though at least me feet were warm) . But comparing the corporate facilities we have at Oakwell to those available to Reading is an uncomfortable experience as they are light years ahead, though to most of us who gives a toss, I guess it shows the difficulties in 'marketing' Oakwell. And no I didn't see 'Barnsley' fan Parky... Onwards and Upwards.
Brilliant that bit! Good account as well of a great evening. Very frustrating to hear that we can do things like this but only now and then. Trouble is that we have to do something like that every game until the end of the season now. Interesting reading that Reading site where nearly every comment could have been cut and pasted off here on any given day this season. Nice that one or two gave us some credit but it was mostly about how bad they were. Football fans are all the same really. Never satisfied I've lived close enough to Reading over the last seven years to go there every time we play so it was annoying that I couldn't be there to witness that last night now that I am up north. I have the advantage, instead, of going to every home game this season. Oh, hang on....
To be fair to Reading fans they must gave been very disappointed with the aptitude and attitude of their team. They played pretty much like we have for most of the season very flat and one paced no real attempt to dictate the pace of the game.
In what way were they light years ahead? I've been to one or two championship corporate days and they've all been pretty similar to Oakwell except that now and again, some of them have had ex-players & former legends leading the proceedings e.g. Norman Hunter when we went to Leeds. Other than that, they were very similar experiences to Oakwell i.e. free car-park, programme, bit of snap, seat outside if required etc.
Don't want to be too poncey but the quality of everything. The decor, the quality of the seats, the level of comfort I guess the facilities in the main but also quality of the food, which was probably restaurant quality, accompanied by the professionalism of the staff. Offering similar things but better.
