This is 25 years later. We've been burning someone else's coal for a quarter of a century. Like I said, you close things down gradually and replace it with newer technology, not just switch it off. The last figures I have seen were for 2012 where over 40% of our electricity was still being produced in coal power stations, so yes, there would have been somewhere to sell it.

Not in Germany. They are opening coal fired stations.

Thats because Merkel **** her pants after the Japanese Nuclear disaster, closing down the German Nuclear strategy of building more and more Nuclear powerplants.

Germany has a more balanced approach to energy than us - but yes, you're right about one of the reasons...

If anyone is interested I'm currently working on the International Energy Agency Coal Information figures, for which I've put the UK coal imports into an Excel spreadsheet for anyone to take a look at.

    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4785928/uk_coal_imports.xls

I could also take a look at CO2 production for coal if anyone really wants it, I have the figures at hand.

Every so often my data work and this BBS aligns and it makes me happy.

I piss on 3 effigies daily... Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair & Bono.

It makes no difference to world affairs, but I think I sleep easier.

If coal is the future, why are they shutting two of the only three remaining deep pit mines?

I get that bit, but why? They have no domestic competition and massive demand. If these 3 remaining pits aren't economically viable, how could the whole industry ever be?

They are competing with coal producing nations whose governments subsidise their coal industry or use what amounts to slave labour to extract the coal. Our government subsidise many forms of energy, but not coal.

I don't believe coal should play a big part in our future, although it might have to, but British coal should have played a much bigger part in our recent past and our present as we slowly make the move to greener energy.
