So, who was your first holiday away without your parents, where did you got and what disasters if any did you come up against.

    Mine...

me and Katie went to Turkey, back in the days when it was about 50p a pint and everyone who went was a millionaire.

anyway to keep it brief, we ended up on a private yacht, with a turkey family sailing between marmaris and ichmalar (Spellings)
One day the police came in to the little bar we was drinking in (only us there) and me and Katie was put in the back of the police car with the lights on, by the father of the same family who owned the yacht, only to me taken to another hotel to drink in..

that was an experience i tell you (looking back now I don't know what the hell we was playing at)

Went with my lass to the north of Corfu - as far away from Kavos as possible - in Sidari 2 years ago.

Went quad biking around all the small villages in the hills around the north of the island, got a proper feel of the actual culture of the island - not just some holiday spot.

Found my favourite place i've ever been to as well. A tiny fishing village called Kouloura. NO tourists (apart from us) So peaceful with unreal panoramic views of the sea and hills around from a tiny port.

North of the island is truly beautiful.

My first hol was in Lloret, about 6 of us. We ended up on the same holiday as Joe Mercer and his wife. He soon became part of our gang and even his wife used to bog him off wth us when we were playing footy against the waiters. His only downfall was that he thought Rotherham was the team of South Yorkshire.

    the weather?
the joy of legally driving on the other side of the road?
going in a supermarket & pointing at things awkwardly as you can't speak the lingo?

The weather is the obvious one, different cultures, different food.

Went to Newquay as one of four 16 year olds on 2 Lambretta scooters. We had so much stuff my back wheel broke in half on the way home.

    Skiing, Italy, 1984, school trip.

My mate Chris and I were 12. The food in the hotel was utter *****, so every night we went to a bar/pizza place and had a pizza. I'd never had a proper pizza before. The guy made it in front of us, twirling it up in the air and that, laughing and joking with us half in Italian, half in English, then got the thing on a shovel and cooked it in a wood fired oven. I still remember that first bite, it was like eating heaven. And it was so cheap they might as well have just given it us.

Being a bar, they obviously served beer. So we had that argument that young friends have about who is going to try their luck at the bar. I guess I lost because I went to the bar and ordered two beers. And they served me! A cracking looking blonde she was. My first pizza and my first proper beer on the same night. We did exactly the same the next night, and all the rest of the week. We never got pissed, we just had the one beer, but at only 12 just one makes you feel nice a light headed.

The teachers caught us coming back to the hotel that first night and banned us from leaving the hotel without supervision, but we weren't in school, we were on holiday and simply took no notice of them. Everyone else on the trip were such jessies, crying off skiing with colds or bumps and bruises and never coming out at night. We didn't even bother stopping for lunch. We'd ski all day and go the pub at night. Frustrated that we didn't listen to a word the teachers said they promised letters home to our parents on our return. They were true to their word.

The letters said we spent all day skiing without checking in with the teachers and left the hotel at night to eat Pizza and they were pretty sure we'd drunk alcohol. Chris and I had already told our parents exactly what we had done and the letters went on the fire.

Was there not a moment where you thought you were being arrested for doing something illegal? I'd have cacked myself, police are bad enough here never mind Turkey.

proper cacked myself, they came into the bar, that this family owned and sat at the table next to us, put the guns on the table and started talkign with the owner, the next thing we are getting told, Kevin, katie quick quick into the car, not wanting to argue with police, I just remember been slightly drunk, and saying to katie, what ever it is we can sort, (heart rate pounding like a bass drum now) drove the whole of a min and told to get out get out, infront on this nice hotel.

After my heart slowed down, I remember saying "what the **** was that about" to the reply I was bored in my bar,we now drink here.

Why the police we could had walked.

    Scary answer was

I look after the police the police look after me. Best Holiday ever.

School holiday - Lido De Jesolo, Italy. On the journey we stopped in Verona to see the Romeo & Juliet balcony and the Queen Mother was there on a private visit.

First holiday with friends - Ipsos in Corfu

We did that too. Pretty unimpressive isn't it. Particularly when you're a kid. Or maybe it's just because I'm male and lacking in culture. My overriding memory of Verona is that it smelt like an open sewer.

Lol yes I remember the smell!! Verona was beautiful. It must be something special if we recognised that as kids. I remember getting dive bombed by the pigeons in St Marks Square which was scary. We also stopped at Lake Garda which was stunning too

The gun stories reminded me when I was on my way home thro a Spanish airport in the middle of the night. The bloke manning the baggage X-ray machine was tired and his head was falling off. There were two police types laughing at him. When I put my bag on, one of the police took his gun out and stuffed it in my bag. It went thro the scanner unnoticed and the police were falling about when they asked him why he has missed the gun in my bag. :)
