    £3 million.

Is that why we're skint ?

You could argue that £3 million is why we've now got O'Grady & Jennings. And Championship status. We're skint because we wasted the rest of it, not because we didn't get enough.

Good deal for both parties. Really pleased for him.

Unless we've got add ons for England caps/sell on clauses it's a ***** deal.

Another half a mill/million at least and we might not be sh1tting our pants at ST renewal time.

Really hope he is picked - I also hope that We had some sensible addons included but as the deal was done by Don I am not holding my breath

£3Million wasnt a bad deal for us though - how many players have we sold to Prem clubs who have actually been a success there - I cant think of many and only John Stones in recent times

Made up for lad. Pure class he is, Everton got a bargain when they dropped us £3m.

Good luck to the lad, deserves to go, better option than most (thinking Jones and Smalling).

Talking to someone the other day who said we had. Don't know how true that is, but surely to God we had the foresight to put those clauses in the deal?

I'm with Dyson on this. Stones is undoubtedly worth more than £3 million now, playing for Everton, but I don't think he was a year ago playing for Barnsley. However, I also agree with you, unless we have the above extras, then the deal was *****.

I think (from memory) it was either £3 million flat or less up front with additional clauses.

So it's £3 million. Nothing else. Unless I'm making that up.

When the lad inevitably plays for England, I really hope the only emotion I feel is one of pride. Rather than the nagging feeling that we were properly mugged off with his deal to Everton. No digging heels in as it wasn't imperative that we sold, no daft price tag on his head (like Huddersfield with Jordan Rhodes) no bidding war and seemingly no appearance money or extras. Just two offers accepted and gone.

These type of players literally come round once in a lifetime. I'll be chuffed for him when he plays for England but there will always be the bitterness.

I said this at the time he was transferred. Blunts got £9 million for the two Kyles who were probably on a similar footing to Stones when they left the Blunts five years ago i.e. young lads from the academy fresh in the first team and showing some potential to go further. If the Blunts had sold Stones they would have got double the amount.

Point I'm making is we always get round to matchday pricing/ number of fans = us being skint, can't compete etcc.

Then when we get a rare opportunity to really look after ourselves it looks like we can't wait to sell at the first sign of a few noughts after the pound sign.

Get that side in order THEN they can start on attendances etc

We spend our lives as Barnsley fans being reminded that we are a 'selling club' or 'punching above our weight' or 'walking tightropes with no legs' and other *****. Well fine, let's be a selling club. Let's cherish our youngsters, mould them into proper footballers and sell them for at least the going rate. We'd have won the jackpot with John Stones but had already cashed in our chips.

Naughton and Walker had played in the Premier League already hadn't they? Whereas Stonesy had played 20 odd games for a club at the bottom of the second tier. And, we're BFC. A soft touch on transfers, and not exactly well known for great young players coming out of our Academy.

I stand by what I said at the time, that £3m was decent for us at that time. Of course it's easy with hindsight to suggest we all knew he'd be amazing and play for England etc etc, but I honestly didn't. I thought he was very talented, with the potential to do great things. But I didn't see this rapid a rise for him. I just wish he'd played centre half for us in those 20 odd games rather than Scott ******* Wiseman.

It's a good point. I don't know if we were fleeced as much with Stones as we have been with many of the players we sold, but we were if there is no sell on clause and international appearances add-on. That's so short sighted and like you said, we didn't have to sell.

Again, it looks like our dealings are shrouded in secrecy - and there's good business reasons for that I suppose, but that just adds to speculation and frustration with the whole episode.

But we keep hearing about how dependant the club is on ST sales to survive - perhaps we wouldn't be if we showed some mettle in our transfer dealings - pure speculation on my part due to my point above.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Had Stonesy not made it in the Everton side and spent the best part of the next couple of years out on loan to championship clubs, barely breaking any pots, it would have looked a beautiful deal, bit like Butterfield. As it is, it looks like Everton have paid £3million for a future England captain.

£3million for an 18 year old is mental money

'We' weren't selling John Stones. The club that had nurtured him, brought him to the professional level and knew him inside out were. The club with experienced 'football men' on its board. 'We' put our trust in such people to get the very best possible deal for BFC - then they don't have to keep reminding us that if not many fans buy season tickets then we'll be forever fighting relegation.
