Rooney!

Rooney does seem to split opinion. I think this is due to a couple of factors. One is the scale of expectation we all had as supporters of England when he broke through at Everton. He was a breath of fresh air, powerful, pacy, ran at defenders and scored spectacular goals. He then carried on that form in the European Championships and we all thought we had the next Gazza. The problem is that he hasn't really fulfilled that potential. His performances for England (particularly in Championships) have been hit and miss and he's not developed in the same way as Ronaldo, Messi with regards to consistently scoring goals. That said, he has scored approximately one in two for club and country so in old money that would be a pretty impressive return.

The second problem I think is physical. I remember reading something that Ferguson had said a few seasons back along the lines of - his body lets him down and the weight he carries with become increasingly difficult to lose as he gets older. I think that has some truth to it. When he's had 10-15 games under his belt he starts to fly, then he'll pick up niggles or more serious injuries and it's back to square one. He's barely worth playing when he's returned from injury as it takes him a few games to get 'match fit'. Unfortunately, those niggles have often come just before or in the middle of important tournaments. Also, he's had to adapt his game as his pace has gone. Moyes tend to drop him into midfield and despite the fact that he's probably Man U's best midfielder I don't think it suits him as much as being a solitary striker. When he was played up top a couple of seasons back, he got his best goalscoring return. He probably also pays the price for not being as greedy as Messi, Ronaldo etc.

In summary, clearly he's not moderate. He's a world class player. Just not as world class as we'd all hoped he would be.

 

Sorry, yeah. Had put in an earlier post that Rooney and Sturridge are clearly above him in the pecking order. But aside from those two, I don't think there's anyone I would start above him. Besides, I suspect Roy will start all three. We've looked a threat with those three playing together.

 

Is that Les, Anton, Rio or their cousin Franz?

that's your opinion and your entitled to it but mine is that he is a completely overated player and not in the top 20 in the world...nowhere near.

Maybe the first time this season he shows any kind of form will be saved for the world cup.

 

Would he get into a world 11? Would he even get into a world 2nd 11? What about a 3rd 11? No to all 3 IMO, ergo can't possibly be 'world class'.

 

Playing in 'the hole' - he'd walk into ANY team in the world, including any World 11. Playing as an out and out striker, no - he wouldn't.

Messi, Ronaldo, Aguero, Suarez, Falcao, Costa, Silva, Zlatan, Cavani, Oscar, Neymar, Bale, Tevez, Fabregas, Hazard, RVP, Gotze, Toure, Lewandowski, Iniesta, Ozil, Reus, Ribery. Just a quick list off the top of my head of players better than Rooney in the various positions he plays. The list could go on and on. World class? Pfft.
