With Brentford promoted to the Championship, do you have any memories of games against Brentford? We haven't played them for about 8 - 9 years so quite a while but we will next season in the Championship (positive thoughts!) :)

Four pubs on every corner of their ground for you away day drinkers!

I saw us lose there, around 1977 or 78 and I was behind the goal with Ian Rush.

That was Ian Rush, the Brentford supporting civil servant, not......

I seem to remember John Pearson outpacing their defence at Oakwell in the late 80's early 90's..Oh and he scored!;)

I remember being pretty much as deranged as I've ever been when Isaiah Rankin scored.

We could've been fooked had we not won that game.

I remember we beat them 3-0 at Oakwell at about this stage in our promotion from the fourth tier in 1968. 3-0 up in the first fifteen minutes and then everyone had a rest for the remaining 75. Two goals from rising star Allen Bradbury and one from Winstanley, I think.

I remember that game, and your summary is correct. If we had drawn, we would have had to go to Wigan (who were champions) and win.

I'm not convinced we would've had a club to support had we dropped into the fourth division.

In administration, the Sterling Consortium had us by the nuts, and relegation would've presumably pushed ticket sales to the lowest they've ever been.

When I lived in London in the early 80's I went there for a night match with a mate who was a Newcastle United supporter. On our way to the ground my mate commented that there didn't seem to be a lot of Barnsley supporters making their way there. I said there was and he asked how I could tell as both teams normally played in red. I replied that he needed to look at the jeans the fans were wearing. Back then flared jeans were still OK in Barnsley and something of a rarity in London. Sure enough there was a healthy turn out from Barnsley! I think we drew that night but it was 0-1 when we played them at Oakwell a couple of weeks later.

That goal arguably saved our football club

Steve Sherwood, tall blond goalie, always had a blinder at Oakwell in the 70s. Think he went on to play for Watford in the Prem/league 1..

Shot from just inside the area following a neat chest down from Rory Fallon IIRC.

My first ever game - and it has a lot to answer for!

My second was the 4-2 home win against Newport County on the last day of the season when promotion was secured. I couldn't believe the atmosphere, and I guess I fell into the trap of thinking hey - this football lark is fun!

How much tears and laughter since then, ey?

I also recall two games at Griffin Park. The first was a disaster and we were 3-0 down at half time, finally losing 3-1 thanks to a Ronnie Glavin penalty, I think. That was the season we started with no proper central defenders, but did draft in a guy called Dugdale. David Speedie played as striker that game, but got little service. I also recall a 1-1 draw in Allan Clarke's last game before going to Leeds. If we had have won, he would have left us top of the table. Banks scored for us, but a draw was fair.

Was it the same bloke who played for Watford? I thought he was at Chelsea before he went to Watford.

Love Griffin Park lived nearby for a couple of years and often went to see Brentford as a second team. The Pearson game when he managed to outpace the entire Brentford defence sticks in my mind just because I still can't quite work out how slow they must have been.

Went to Griffin Park years ago (about 1978 I think), longest I've ever travelled to an away game.

I was in Oslo on an Inter Rail holiday with 2 mates. We'd been together about 3 weeks and were starting to get fed up of each other. I saw the fixtures and thought "F...it I'm off". I jumped on a train in Oslo and arrived in Brentford about a day later We played crap, had a bloke sent off (Paul Walker I believe) and lost 2-0. On the train home to Tarn I realised I was a complete loony in those days.
