I think we can all see how football is now, and that Barnsley FC doesn't have the scale or the financial backing to compete. I'm not talking about relegation survival, or midtable championship, but going to the Premier League and mixing it properly.

I think the future could be a merger between Donny Rovers, Rotherham United, and us - one stadium, average attendance of above 20,000, maybe 25,000 - 30,000 plus for the big games - new stadium, new board, new backers, South Yorkshire United. Real aspirations. Decent football. Good players. Worth watching.

Barnsley FC has been dying onit's arse for some time and if it was an animal you'd put it out of it's misery.

I just cannot see, without a significant investor, what the future is for this club and many others like it.

Controvertial, I'll get ready for both the reasonable responses and those that suggest I'm not a real supporter and no doubt much worse.

If we merged and became South Yorkshire Utd or anything else for that matter I would be calling it a day.

    Tha not a real supporter.

I can't see it happening. What will happen is teams like us will scrap over an ever decreasing piece of the pie and try and get back to the Championship albeit for a season or two.

Sorry mate, not a hope in hell.

When SKY took over Rugby League, that is what they proposed. There were to be a number of club mergers, the one I remember being Castleford, Wakefield, and Featherstone. The outcry from the fans forced them to think again, and restructure.

The same thing would happen if your idea was adopted. Some would go, but many would walk away.

Sorry mate, I hope you realise this is a reasoned response.

Add Sheffield clubs to it and build a 90'000 all seater where DVS used to be

I'm sure Rev Preedy is turning in his grave.

I'd find it hard to feel any allegiance to such a club so if it were to happen then I for one would probably find someone more convenient and suited to what I want out of a Saturday and follow them instead. But you'd be gambling that for every supporter like me who's too old or unwilling to accept change you could attract a young family or at least the next generation of supporters who are more interested in the here and now than in the history. I don't know if it'd work or not but I for one wouldn't want to be a part of it.

In essense and in another sport/country I can see where you're coming from. It will not and shouldn't happen in football in this country.

One sticking point with your vision is that the 'new club' would probably have to restart way way down the football pyramid and therefore would probably attract far lower crowds due to the level and quality of football on offer. Then thered be the like of me who would watch BFC in the non league but never ever as part of a merger!

It would be the death of the game if anything remotely like that occurred!

If that was to be the case then I'd start watching Chesterfield.

Even with a merger dont think the gates for such a team would be any bigger than ours now. It would not gain any supporters but would lose thousands from each team.

Good job the much maligned Hemsworth didn't post that

An interesting post - worth some thought and debate - however if Hemmsy had posted it he'd have been hung from Shafton Two Gates!

The bouncing Czech Robert Maxwell tried to create Thames Valley Royals out of Oxford United and Reading and got shot down for it. Quite rightly so.

I would sooner watch Barnsley in the old County Senior League than a merged version. Stupid idea anyway, it could never happen

BRF is absolutely right, if we are thinking logically.

Football supporters aren't logical beings, though, when it comes to their clubs. I wouldn't support South Yorkshire Frankenstein. No way.

Mike McDonald wanted to amalgamate the deedars back in the 1990s. Again, it makes perfect business sense. Both sets of pigs hated the idea, though: they'd rather struggle alone as Wednesday and United than get together. Even had they done so, there'd have been no guarantee of success.

For most of their income these 3 clubs rely on TV money, so the income between the clubs would reduce by at least two thirds overnight. Fans of all 3 clubs would also run away faster than rats from a sinking ship.

Otherwise, your plan is a pearler
