Big home play off tonight against Cambridge United at the Mecca of non league known as the Shay. Should be a good crowd there and they really need to take a lead into the second leg on sunday. Back to back promotions from them into the football league would be wonderful.
Used to be our main bogey team in the early to mid seventies. The Shay was an absolute tip in those days, used by both the town's football & speedway teams. Rather than terracing, you had to stand on a grass bank. Or, as it always seemed to be raining when we played them, should that be mud?
Was talking to two FCH fans on train back north after we played watford they had been playing in London they love that league think it's a breath of fresh air said they hope to go up but will really miss it if they do
Those were the days, just reminds you of what supporting Barnsley was like, but we had bigger crowds then than now, and we enjoyed the battles
I remember one night game when we were stood at the top of the bank in the pouring rain. Twenty minutes into the match, we had slid down to pitch level because of the mud without taking one step!
Just seen this on someone's signature on their forum, Aspin's record as manager. PLAYED 214.. WON.... 124...DREW... 51......LOST.. 39.....GOALS... 467.. AGAINST ...225....POINTS... 423....14/8/09-----26/4/14 That's phenomenal at any level.
Yep rumours are port vale will go after aspin at end of season . Great record he has at Halifax and he's played for port vale too for years
I cant remember those crowds ? We had big crowds when Clarke took over, but surely not in the early to mid seventies ?
I will alaways remember an evening game at Oakwell It was a midweek night game and we were due to meet Halifax in the cup on the following saturday... Alan Ball Senior was Manager of them then.. he had sent his son Alan Ball Jnr to suss us out... Me and my good mate Lol Cottle from Hoyland clocked the great Alan Ball... a member of the England team that won the World cup... 3 Lions and all that... he had come to watch us to give his Dad the best advice on us.. we approached Alan Ball the younger. Now this was not that long after 1966... me and Lawence were excited . All we asked for was an Autograph on our programmes that night... his reply was wonderful. " F U C K O F F" simply that.
Re: I will alaways remember an evening game at Oakwell To win to nill they couldn't have asked for more. Over 3,600 there too. Cambridge probably took 500ish at a guess.
Re: I will alaways remember an evening game at Oakwell Penistone lad playing at centre half for Halifax last night number 15 Roberts, the lad up front looks a good prospect, Lee Gregory
Re: I will alaways remember an evening game at Oakwell Was this the same game old man ball had police protection, after receiving a letter saying he would be stabbed by a cyanide dart. .
