And then continue to vote for toffs who have the polar opposite of their own best interests at heart - ie. Thatcher, Cameron, BoJo, Farage. Proper thick. And I mean genuinely, properly, thick as a copper's wallet daft.
I don't think it does Barnsley any favours being so staunchly behind Labour, I'd be surprised if they have a safer set of seats in the entire country. The MPs don't seem too bad, but I have my reservations over the council leadership as they know they can pretty much do what they want without fear of being voted out.
The council seem to change direction with the wind - rejecting new stores at Cortonwood because it would "affect Wombwell High Street", while approving a new Tesco at Hoyland that would probably have a lot more effect on Wombwell and Hoyland/Common for example. A more cynical and bitter person than me might suggest it was down to who put most into the envelope.
Id extend that to anyone who votes. No politician represents the working class anymore. Spoil your ballot.
Definitely, the town centre has been a massive f*ck up, blamed on the recession but they'd actually vacated the County Way offices and emptied a lot of the shops below a long time before the effects hit. Few conspiracies you can tie to that I suppose, possibly weren't happy with the kickbacks they'd be getting from potential contractors. If anything, the recession should have made the town centre project cheaper as the big construction firms will often do projects at break even during such times so that they are able to retain their staff and skill set for the recovery. The library thing is a weird one, couple of million to refurb it then out of the blue a couple of years later it's all going to be knocked down and relocated. Then there's the town hall work - looks really good yeah, but it ought to do for the money it no doubt cost - was it really necessary? The town hall has always looked pretty impressive with the surroundings of it generally well kept. Funny time to do this as well in the middle of cutting so many jobs from BMBC and outsourcing entire services. Their priorities are all wrong. If they have money for this trivial stuff, why don't they just sit on it for a few years, let it build up and do something that will actually make a real difference such as knocking down the misguided, useless monstrosities the same people decided to build in the 70's.
We had a significant Barnsley Independent movement in the 00s. They were up to 22 seats, making gains and seriously pressuring Labour for overall council control. It's dropped off again now, I don't know why, but I think the people of Barnsley do look at viable alternatives. The fact is, they don't see any who would look after their interests. The Tories of have been rejected out of hand, for obvious reasons. The BNP had Barnsley as their number one target, their presence was everywhere, campaigning in the town centre on a weekly basis, constantly knocking on doors and leafleting, but thankfully, and it makes me very proud, we told them to **** off and now they have. I think UKIP might do well here though. The people of Barnsley didn't want a racist party like the BNP, but that doesn't mean immigration is not a concern and I would imagine Farage and his amiable blokeyness will appeal to a lot of people. I wouldn't vote for them in a million years, but I can understand why people will. They're fed up of the mainstream parties, they want an alternative, not racist thugs like the BNP, but eloquent blokes in ties who like a drink and a smoke and tell everyone what they want to hear, while making the traditional parties look like a bunch of fools. Unfortunately, he's just the same and in many respects, actually worse. But at present, he does look different.
Yes, why would people have ambition and want q better life The two things that labour have to stifle to survive
Or the fact that Tesco have a history of wasting public money continually challenging planning decisions...
I haven't voted since I was 18. And the only thing that would change that, is if the UKIP/BNP/EDL vote started to get stronger. They all $hit in the same pot
That is very true. If you look at how things were in the late 1920's & how they are today, the "National Socialists" started off with very similar principles as Farage's lot. The Labour Party is sadly a joke, the Tories, are... the Tories & the Lib Dems have sold their souls. I'm voting Green. They want a change to the EEC, but to stop all these global companies fecking us over. I realise they ain't gonna win.
As per the other thread, what good has voting Labour done for Barnsley exactly? One of the poorest areas in the country, second worst schools in the country and don't blame Thatcher because it's been like that long before she ever entered politics.

If anyone should choose to look at Barnsley as an industrial community, prior to the Labour movement and the trades unions - tell me if conditions for the town and people living and working in the mines was better or worse? Child labour, mortality rates, health and safety, working wages, housing, hygene... Tell me that, Wombwell, for example, was improved by Thatcher - and that Wombell wouldn't have suffered as badly under a labour government? This can't even be I question, surely?
