Blog post and video: Bobby Hassell - A Decade/End of an Era

I included highlights of his time at Oakwell, games he was involved in. I'm not BFC, I don't have expensive media suites with a back catalogue of every game he's played for us, so I could only use footage already out there. I did my best at short notice.

As I said, the club ought to be doing these things. But then, they're one of the few clubs on twitter not to pass their wishes onto Bradford City today. So, I'm not at all surprised.

 

No disrespect intended, pal, I enjoyed the video, just wondered the reasoning behind it

 

I understand your point. I did think twice about including certain clips. But I wanted it to show the good times we've had whilst he was here. Appreciate the feedback. I hope I'm making a celebratory promotion video this time next year.

 

You seem to have a real downer on our club at the moment, Andy. Perhaps they sent an appropriate message through more traditional channels?

 

I feel my downer is influenced by their actions, or, in most cases, their inactivity.

I'm positive about my club enough to be there next season as ever. That's all they care about, to be honest.

It's not just BFC though, it's football in general that's losing me. But I'm forever linked to it, be it through BFC, or my relationship, my family/friends. I'll always be a football fanatic. I just get the impression I'm no longer making a difference that's noticed. It's football, but not as we once knew it.


And in response to your committee query previously, you're right. But the club have to green light so much and if they're not acting upon requests then there's nothing that his committee can do. If you get my drift?

 

Legend? No. Top bloke and top player yes. I'd say our last legend was probably Hignett. The last defenders were Eaden and De Zeeuw and I don't think Bobby's in that class of player. Loved the video though almost brought a tear to the eyes.

I don't think he was as good as Eaden, but then, that's nowt to be ashamed of. I think his longevity, his loyalty, his off-field activities and the stuff we've achieved during his ten years sees him as a legend. But that's only an opinion. It's why it's a personal blog, and not the Barnsley Chronicle. Although it's bias for Bobby is just as blatant....

It's at times like this when I'm quite glad I know no one at the club, so can't pass any judgement calls with regards to aspects like finance, recruitment, arrangements with regards to Bobby's testimonial and so on. I can make conjectures & guess, but I simply don't know, mate.

 

IMHO you don't have to be a top player to be a legend!

They come in all forms for me. Norman Rimmington I'm sure ALL will agree is most definitely donned with Legend status at BFC.

Each to there own but my own personal thoughts of what constitutes been a legend most definitely makes Bobby one in my eyes.

I no longer know a BFC player.

I'm hoping that's a good thing, for the reasons you've listed.

 

Now...If you "know" a player at the club...you have to remember that he's feeding you his side of the story.

One goal I remember than isn't on the video is Bobby thumping in a volley from a corner at home to MK Dons. Anyone got a link to that?

The word legend is used to much these days.

However this is well and truly earned.

Bobby thoroughly deserves his testimonial - he's been an excellent player and I wish him well.

However I wouldn't go as far as to say that his departure brings about the 'end of an era.'

I think 'legend' can only be said of someone after they have died....??

It's been a funny old scenario, I've been surprised at the fan reaction at him leaving, he's played under several managers and was only a first choice for a few of them and the impression I got on here this time last year was that he was only getting another years' contract because it was his tenth year - something of a gesture and the fact that he, more than likely, took a big pay cut.

Whilst Bobby is a firm fans favourite, you probably have to go back to the late 90s team to find anyone held in the same regard, he obviously isn't a club favourite. They haven't made much of the fact he's leaving, he's never been the subject of any of those cheesy YouTube videos (as Whitey mentioned on his blog) and they've made nothing of it being a testimonial year - which these days is quite a rarity where a player has moved from one club and spent 10 years at another, of course there are probably hundreds of examples where a player has gone through the ranks at a club and been on the books ten years.

I guess we will find things out in dribs and drabs about what really went on, from the outside looking in it does seem that Bobby was treated harshly but maybe he didn't help himself in certain ways either - may not have put across the right vibe in the dressing room, might not have done much in training etc.

Whatever happened he should have definitely been given more opportunities this season, Bobby reckons he was fit for all but about three weeks of it and he looked solid against Leeds away. When you consider the sh*t that was in the team instead of him it's an aberration that he wasn't given a run of games in midfield - no one would complain if he couldn't get in the team for quality players who were banging a goal in every few games but Fox? Woods?

 

The "legends" thing is interesting. Rimmo is the only one I can think of that is thought of a such for non football reasons not sure if anyone can think of any others. Do we have any others?
