I love talking to them I always invite them in for a good old chat. I usually quote the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe back to them if they quote owt to me. It's hours of endless fun.

 

I see both sides of Ramadam. Muslims do it so they can be aware of what millions go through with hunger issues. But I can see why from the outside it looks like they are promoting binge eating and how they never have ramadam in say June when they would only be able to eat for like two hours a day.

 

Due to the length of the Muslim calendar, their year is shorter than ours and the dates of Ramadam/Eid change every year. It will happen at the end of June in 2014 and early June in 2015. However, due to the rotation of the planet, the length of days closer to the Equator are less variable than in the north or south, so the middle east would be less affected by the seasons than Norway for example.

 

They're having it at the end of June.

I work with loads of Muslims. Some of my favourite colleagues to be honest, are Muslims. And they've explained their religion to me, and I found it really interesting. Learned a lot. Got me thinking etc. Which is always good.

We start work at 6am, and apparently, they're only allowed to eat from 10pm until 3am. So I've got ******* no idea how they're going to manage it without cheating.

 

I've always been into science, particularly stuff concerning the universe and that doesn't really fit with religion. We're just a ball of rock floating through space which just happens to be in the right place for life to evolve over billions of years. There are no doubt millions of other planets just like ours as well so I can't fathom how anyone can seriously believe in a higher power, the prominent people in the bible etc were just taking advantage of peoples' ignorance when no one knew any better with the earth being some vast flat land that went on forever.

Don't mean to offend anyone like. I can see where adopting the values of the book (to some extent) can possibly help you live a better life, loving thy neighbour etc but it's not for me.

Apparently it's quite common to get up in the middle of the night, have something to eat and then go back to bed for the last few hours. Not sure I'd fancy it - if I try to eat anything just before bedtime I get all sorts of heartburn.

 

They are allowed dispensation for work, but I can't remember the process for it. At least two of the teams in the world cup will be mostly or entirely practicing Muslims (Iran and Algeria). I believe that these players can eat/drink before and during the game if they need it.

 

This is what I've said to them. I go to bed before 11pm every night if I'm working the next day. Up before 5am for work at 6. My Muslim pals go to bed earlier than I do, so as I've said to em, I don't see how they've the time to eat if their allowed hours are between 10pm and 3am.

The Muslims I work with all reckon they're not able to drink/eat whilst at work.

There are no prayer rooms at our place either (rare for Bradford is that) so they have to cram their five daily prayers (all differing in length of time) in outside of work. It seems a right carry on to me. But hey, who am I to judge?

 

Looking at it, I might have misunderstood and generalized a bit between the top sportsmen and normal workers. There is a general dispensation for ill and weak people (pregnant women, etc), but some parts of the religion allow people to continue to eat if they need to, but instead are allowed to feed people that need help. So it is entirely possible that the Algerian team (just an example), could eat before/during their games and training, but also give a donation to help feed the poor near to where they are based.

It could also be argued that by playing well in the WC, they are highlighting the glory of god but not eating and deliberately putting themself at risk isn't within the spirit of the fast.

 

Indeed. It's a fascinating thing. Well, it was for me. Broaden your horizons or whatever.

I still think they cheat. I've said as much to them, and their answers have me thinking I'm right. But then what would be the point?

and that is state of mind. We need to shake the losing mentality and negativity. Looking forward to some good signings to show our intent. Fingers crossed.

 

Yeah I knew a few Muslims back in college days. All women and they can get out of it if it's time of the month for them, which sounds fair. Not so fair when the sister who had got out of it was munching away at dinnertime right next to her sister

Christians follow the teachings of Christ - Muslims those of the Prophet Allah.
As Jehovah's Witnesses are awaiting the coming of their Leader whose teachings do they follow - who do they pray to?

(I think JW is the fastest growing Western Religion at the present time.)
