    erm...see the name
That is a great post DT and as others (who grew up in that era) have said brings back some wonderful memories. First stood on the Ponty in 1970. Bored to death....but I was only 6. Then sat in the West Stand a couple of times in 74. Bored to death.....but I was only 10. Then stood on the Ponty with my mates in 76....never looked back since.....even though I've been bored to death a few times!!
P.S. That paint is really really RED.

Watch the video of that game back if you get the chance, you might recognise that young ball boy as a certain Mr Chris Morgan!!

The first game I remember, was on a Tuesday night in 1986 as 6 year old, sat on a cushion on a barrier with my back on mi granddads chest, at the back of the what now is the west stand lower, warped up in a white scarf with Barnsley printed on it in red that we'd just bought from a shed near away end, I can remember thinking wow my granddad knows everyone in Barnsley as everyone said hyup and called him by his first name then asking who's this pointing at me, not realising at the time he'd been going to oakwell every other week for 52 years and standing in the same place. With the same people, and that I was just following in the footsteps of my 4 uncles before me, who all made their debuts at oakwell as 6 year olds, I remember all that and the buzz about the place, the smell, and the swearing & shouting, and being told what was going on, on the pitch, but can't remember anything about the match not even who we played, years later my grandad said as we walked out of oakwell that night I ask if we could come again tomorrow, and he knew he'd just ruined another little lads weekends for the rest of his life, and he was proud as punch, looking at the photos to me that is what being a Barnsley fan is all about and it depresses me to know it's gone for ever. But at least the memory's are still locked away in my head of what football used to be and what I wish it still was I suppose

Oakwell Ales was written in white on the roof and kept re-appearing no matter how many times they painted it over in black.

Whilst I enjoy seeing what Oakwell used to be like, I'm glad it's not like that now. Maybe you just had to have been there, but I can't imagine me ever having gotten into it if I'd have to stand there all match. Looking at that picture makes me think of being uncomfortable, crowded, not having a good view. Add cig smoke to that and there's no chance.

I suppose you could have sat in the upper west stand, I personally miss the standing and packed stands, the atmosphere has never been the same since.

My memories of it are quite vague in this form but I don't remember ever being particularly impressed by the place, it was a bit of a dive, whereas when the East Stand opened me and my mates couldn't wait to sit in it and did so until the Ponte End was rebuilt.

I've had no inclination to sit in the West Stand since (although my Premier League season ticket was in the West Upper this wasn't my choice).
