I've watched a few games/highlights this weekend and the standard of football over there is laughable. No wonder so many British based players are heading over there, easy money!
For me the game over here is just far too slow, MLS are hoping by allowing the european players in it will improve and speed up the game. MLS over the past 10 years or so since its inception has been full of South American players, not here for soccer but for an easy way into the USA. For me and other coaches I have talked to MLS should be trying to get the best young African players in and younger European players. This will help the USA produce better players as the quality of opponent improves.
Not entirely related but speaking of American football, I've just been reading about the worst players to have won a world cup, players like Roque Junior, Stephan Guivarc'h and a certain ex Man United player Kleberson, who's now plying his trade in the NASL for Indy eleven...Some fall that!
For me having a lot of foreign players hasn't made the English players worse. English players choosing to take more money to sit on the bench at a richer club rather than get paid less but play regularly is what has stopped them reaching their potential. Butterfield for example was guaranteed a start every week at Oakwell but took the money to be a bit part player. Nowt wrong with that at all but it is that which is the reason not the fact that he's playing against foreigners
apparently there are more kids playing football (soccerrrr) in America than anywhere else in the world but it seems to be something they grow out of and lose interest. I suppose it's like us playing rounders at primary school, no-one goes on to play baseball. I gather they prefer sports that are heavily based on stats as that's all they go on about when you watch a live event over there, yes you get statistical analysis in football but scoring a goal is so much more complex in that you can have 20% possession and one shot on target and win a game. The equivalent would never happen in a popular American sport.
In a country with over 300 million people and some 70-80 million kids its hard to believe the USA cannot produce a great team. I coach in the biggest youth soccer organisation in the USA. MSI. They have never produced any kids that have gone on to be international players. Been part of this enviroment I am giving my time for free where most teams pay there coaches. The problem in MSI isnt the kids ability it is the poor way these kids are coached. I coach u10 soon to be U 11 girls, when I took over the team in summer last year, these kids couldnt pass or control a football, there last coach was a guy who was a part time childrens entertainer. He had them kicking balls off small cones and used a clowns horn to get there attention. In the last year I have managed to teach these girls how to play soccer. Tonight was our end of season party we had a parent v girls game then dinner and presentation. The parents have said to me that the feel very priviledged to have such a commited coach and gave me $300 as a thankyou. I dont coach for this, I want each one of my girls to realise there potential, but the response from the parents and the kind gesture brought a lump to my throat. The USA just needs to get proper grass roots coaches involved and believe me the worlds there oyster.
No he didnt. He wanted to try and show he was good enough to play in the Premiership every week, rather than stagnate in a piss poor team at Barnsley !
Aye, he was a right fool for accepting a four year contract at a Premier League club. He should have stayed at Oakwell, accepted the 12 month contract we offered on 8 times less money. The fans at BFC loved him, always supported him, can't believe he felt he could prosper in the top flight. The ambitious, sensible basterd.
He started in two games for Norwich, and appeared as a sub in another. They won all three, he was man of the match in two. All in cup competitions, like. Against Donny, Spurs and Peterborough. But to fail in the Premier League he'd have had to have been given an opportunity. But it wasn't forthcoming as Hughton loaded his team with more and more high cost foreigners. Which worked, as Norwich were relegated last season. Looking forward to seeing him laik them next season, in the Championship. We used to be in that division. We even prospered in it occasionally, until we undervalued quality players like Butterfield.
It's football that's ******. Can't hate the players, just the game. Some far averager laikers than JB have earnt far more money and done far less in their careers. No idea how an MLS thread has ended going down this route, mind..
I hold a season ticket for the fire, i honestly believe that standard of football is rapidly increasing in this league, I have noticed this over the last few seasons. We have had a few young english players out here on loan, and have got a spurs man at the moment. I think it is still a growing sport and our crowds at home a getting bigger and better, more atmosphere etc. ave attendance about 15k I think
But if he stayed here at Barnsley, he would never have known if he could cut it in the Premiership. I dont think he failed miserably either, but that is not what the thread is about , unless we are turning it into ananyone that leaves Barnsley is a lovely person thread ?
