He's a nice chap. He does some good stuff in the community. He prays. He likes Barnsley. He has been at the club for years. For some people that is enough. For me it's not. I have never rated Hassle as a good player and never will. He's been lauded as 'Sir' for a combination of emotional reasons that do not reflect his overall ability. He is not quick, he gets skinnned easily and he's now 'old' for a football player. The reason he wasnt picked recently is because he's not good enough, Simple as. Are we going to want him in 5 years time cos he's 'Sir' Bobby. No we wont because he'll not be good enough then either. I wait assassination from people who dont know what a good footballer really is......

    I agree.

'Sir' Bobby does not chime with his abilities as a footballer, or his stature as a man.

It should be 'Saint' Bobby. No more and no less. I don't care whether he's a limited defender, or whether he's akin to the miracle child of Franco Baresi and Franz Beckenbauer: he loves Barnsley as much as I do, and we'd be infinitely better-served with a squad full of people who care as much as he.

All you can ask from anyone is that they give their best. He always did, and that's nothing short of inspirational for a feckless, lazy half-wit such as I. He was treated like dung by a succession of managers, but always kept his counsel. When selected, he played all over the bloody pitch, including in goal, and his sense of responsibility never deserted him.

If Man United fans still sing about Eric Cantona, four billion years after he disgraced himself by kicking a supporter, we should sing about Bobby at every game until the end of the universe. He's one of us, treated playing for Barnsley with the same single-mindedness one of us would, and he never ran his mouth off about things being, like, dench, in his self-centred little world, and nor does he call his manager unpleasant names in the public domain when many other footballers have done so for far less reason.

    Bobby Hassell. Gentleman. Legend. Ours.

In his 10 years with the club Bobby has done more on the pitch (appearance wise and I reckon you could count the bad games on one hand) and off the pitch for the community than 99% of the players he's had as team mates.

This IMHO alone, maketh the legend/saint/sir status. Be careful what you wish for. Wether you rate him on the pitch or not, come August I'm pretty sure the 'haters' will look at our squad of 'talent' and would relish an opportunity for a Bobby return.

IMHO it's loyalty, pride, passion, honesty, integrity, respect etc etc that makes a club legend (amongst others). Rimmo is quite rightly one, was he a Glavin or a Redfearn????? I think not.

A post mocking one of the Club and Community's most loyal servants, and his supporters? Weird. There are far more deserving people out there to attack.

It's just a nickname. Why are you getting wound up by a nickname? It's not even a nickname that relates to how good he is as a footballer. I don't know anyone who claims Bobby Hassell is one of the best players we've ever had. He's a competent footballer, a player who puts a shift in every week, a player who would guarantee you a decent performance. He never set the world alight, but you don't need every player in your team to do that, you need some out there to be consistent, to do the dirty work, to keep to a level without making mistakes that cost you goals. Bobby Hassell, along with Steve Foster, did that for Barnsley for years. The first season back in the Championship without either of them and we're relegated.

That's not to say Bobby Hassell would have saved us this season, like you said, he's getting on, and as he's got older he's become more injury prone. But we didn't replace our stalwarts with similar players. We couldn't rely on their replacements in the same way, we didn't get the same performance week in and week out, they made mistakes and cost us goals. And we paid the price.

Sir Bob hasn't received his moniker for the way he played football. His play was appreciated, but the real reason he's become such a favourite is that he's stuck with us for 10 years, he's put his heart and soul in to the club, he's a good guy who loves our town and gives something back with his work in the community.

Every day we read of footballers getting in trouble with the law, doing some really despicable things, cheating on the playing field, moaning off it, only interested in the money, no loyalty, no commitment. Bobby Hassell isn't like that, he's not a saint but he's a good man. Give me a good man over a good footballer every day of the week. Bobby was both and I can't think of a player more deserving of the title 'sir'.

Why do you always manage to be able to write out my exact thoughts better than I can when you don't even know what I'm thinking?!?

He is a loyal footballer, loyal to a team such as ours who haven't been treating him particularly well. I don't see where the next player of that ilk is going to come from. The bloke is genuinely admirable. I think he is more than good enough for next year.

You're entitled to your opinion, even though you are wrong. Don't try telling others what to do, think or say though. Sir Bob is a legend, a leader of men, a bloody decent footballer and an even more decent human being.

I'm not sick of it, wish he was still here. I've not seen any evidence that he was not up to the task last season, but then again I don't watch training.

Barnsley Legend, in my opinion. I don't care what anyone else thinks.

Agree to some extent - not keen on the "Sir Bobby" but it's only a nickname. He's not the most gifted defender we've had and wouldn't make any "BFC Best team" list but because of the Bosman ruling, players like him are few and far between these days hence why he is revered. I'd put him on a par with Spud Murphy - bit of a character who always gave 100% and remained loyal to the club and the town after he finished playing. I'd say Spud was a legend and Bobby is in the same mould.

I've done a quick search and it looks like redtail was the first to call him Sir Bobby on here 5 and a half years ago.....

If you've issues with the nickname it's a shame you can't respect him.
