I ask as one who was among the keenest for his appointment.

Already softening us up by describing the opening alehouse league fixtures as "tough". No mention of the squad...... such as it is. I know some on here will say it's early days, but don't we usually report back for training on 1st July? Surely he's going to have jack **** to work with?

Stalemate with COG still on the payroll, and no sign of investment from PC. It's looking a bit like Rotherham in the days of Ken Booth to me.

Quite the opposite in my opinion. He admitted that we'd be expected to beat them all. He talked positively. In fact, I felt more optimistic than I did before after listening to him. And as we're about to make our first significant signing, I'm hoping folk will start getting behind the manager etc and stop ******* bairning about stuff that hasn't happened.

He said people will view the opening fixtures and think we can win them all. He said he was happy to start with a home fixture so we could get off to a good start. He didn't mention the squad because he wasn't asked about the squad, the interviewer stuck to questions about the fixtures.

    You're weird.

I may have missed something as I've had a lot on work wise recently but why do you say that?

That's the point - I don't think there has been anything to miss.

It's just the impression I get, Gally. It's quite clear that we have made much reduced offers to the players who took us down - quite rightly, in my view. But there doesn't appear to be much going on in terms of replacements. Again - and this is only my impression - it looks to me as though we are waiting to offload COG before we get anyone else in.

Not sure if anyone can confirm that we start back on 1 July, but that's 12 days away. And apart from a reserve goalie we seem to have no-one except the numpty's who took us down.

We're apparently about to sign Kane Hemmings.

He was player of the year in the second tier of Scottish football. He beat Marc McNulty to that award. That's the Marc McNulty who Sheff Utd have signed and reckon is amazingly talented. So even if both aren't 'name' players or owt, it shows we're in the market for similar players.

No idea why you or anyone else are moaning.

Well Patrick has invested plenty in the club in the past and has never mentioned it so I don't think we can know if he is planning on supplementing our budget next year. If we are trying to get the very best deals for Barnsley football club it seems to me those will be done towards the end of the summer when players have an idea of who's offering them what.

I've no idea why you think I'm moaning. I'm observing, and pardon me, but I thought this was a discussion forum.

As far as Scottish second tier players are concerned, I remember rave notices when we signed Jim O'Brien, who played at a higher level in Scotland but to me never really lived up to the original billing. As for Paddy McGinty, he was a bit of an enigma.

    Ronnie Glavin weren't bad though!

Don't get me wrong, Gally. I don't think Patrick should shovel money in, and frankly, I wouldn't if I were him. I think I would look to get some investment in by some means or other though, because I think we're in a bit of a downward spiral as a club. Cost cutting cost us our Championship place, so what will continuing on that track do next?

Not sure I agree with that. We had a finite budget and every effort was made over the last few years to ensure as much of that as possible was spent on the playing side.

Some people seem to believe that because we were operating within the FFP rules, we weren't spending all the money available to us. Truth is the exact opposite. We were spending everything we earned plus money from PC. There was no cost cutting, we spent all we had and more. I'm not saying we put ourselves at risk, it was within the planned budget that allowed the club to continue operating, but we spent up.

The budget was cut though. Some seasons ago when Robins decided to leave - he did so because the budget was being slashed. Loanees such as Harewood and Garry O'Connor were on massive wages compared to what Keith Hill's era could offer.

We were spending more than we had. We decided sensibly to live within our means.

We were being bankrolled by Patrick Cryne. He decided he didn't want to do that any more, or not to the same extent. When he made that decision we had to cut the budget because there were no other funds available to us. That's not cost cutting as such, it's just spending the money you have. If you can't get your hands on any more, you can't spend it.

Since PC has been at the club there has been cost cutting. Anything that has not been to do with playing football has been downsized, cut back, whatever you want to call it. But the money saved there has gone on the playing staff.
