Bought this yesterday and about 1/4 away through (Mel Machin just got the Job) Really enjoying it to be honest Whats everyone else's thoughts on the book
I thought it was a good insight into the workings of BFC. It is obviously from his point of view, so you have to accept that, but on the whole he seems pretty honest about things and holds his hands up when he thinks mistakes were made. definitely worth the money.
A very interesting insight into the running of the club during (in my opinion) the most enjoyable years being a Barnsley fan. Good sales job that....
I really enjoyed it too. It gave a perspective on football that you don't usually see. I attended the 'evening with' show at the Lamproom at the time, which was also good. What I'd love to hear though are the stories he couldn't put in the book. He was more candid at the show than in the book anyway, but I bet he has got some even better stories to tell that he wouldn't want sharing with the general public.
I attended the same evening. I went on my own and sat next to a woman near the front. I spoke to her a little, mostly about John Dennis as he was the one we'd gone there to see. I like John Dennis a lot, despite the admin years, so I was mostly complimentary, but I was ribbing him a little. Towards the end of the evening John spoke of his wife and how he couldn't have done it all without her. He introduced her to the audience and there she was, sat next to me. I wish I could say it was a unique experience, but **** like that happens to me all the ******* time.
An excellent read, thoroughly enjoyed it. Gave you an insight into the goings-on at the club during that period. An interesting part for me was when JD mentioned the appointment of Allan Clarke as manager, stating that Billy Bremner was first choice. Ernest Dennis, (JD's father) used to park his car at his sister's house, next to my mum & dad's house, on a Saturday after the game. Barnsley were languishing at the lower end of the table at that time, so I stuck a note under his windscreen wider, suggesting we got ourselves up the table aiming for promotion, by making Bremner the manager. A couple of months later, Allan Clarke arrived, and that was the beginning of our resurgence. My note was probably totally unconnected, but who knows? I'd love to find out from JD if his father ever mentioned it.
Enjoyed co-writing the book with John, a man football is poorer without, in my opinion. It's sad BFC don't value what he could bring to the club. Mr Dennis was unpaid during his whole tenure on the board and never claimed expenses.
Completely agree with you. Really enjoying the book up to now. John Dennis IMO seems a great guy who is willing to hold his hands up when things go wrong.
I thought the book was a bit sanitized. Mr Dennis may not have taken any expenses out of the club. I think he must be a fool not to take his expenses. But one ex-board member was given the Stadium Managers job at at an alleged £60-70k. I believe this was after the family building business went bust.
Does it explain why we got rid of Redfearn? (and before anyone else says anything we could've got another 4 years from him and we never got anywhere near replacing him for owt like a million, although we did find silly money to throw at the likes of Mike Sharon etc) I think we got up more by luck than judgement - and when the Premier League TV financial whirlwind hit we were well out of our depth, without the experience or the nouce to cope. I think John Dennis' inability to evolve from being a second division shoe string Chairman into a big budget Premier League man was as much an underlining cause of our subsequent demise as anything else. But as a man running a club on nip and tuck budget he was very very good, and has Barnsley FC blood, as much as any of us have. I wish I could say that of our current board, but I don't believe it, not deep down.
I don't think I'll ever top the Middlesbrough away game of last season for 'unique' experiences. Sat watching my club with my partner and family watching her son who played for my club help relegate my club whilst former chairman of my club (and Matthew Murray, bless you) sat in front of us. Can't imagine a more bizarre scenario happening to me. Love life.
It was strange Andy. And let's not forget the date it was on - the anniversary of said chairman's promotion to the Premier League.
i think you ought to mention it again Mr W Hitey, just in case anyone doesnt know..... but i would assume everyone does by now. hth
You're becoming like I'm Spartacus. Constantly trolling me on here. It's flattering, but a tad sad. I'd rather repeat something of note, than post potentially libelous garbage on top of your other garbage. MTH. Smiley face.
Good afternoon, Mr Reev. Hope Royal Ascot is proving more fathomable to you than it is to me. Hopefully, Cannock Chase is about to improve matters!
