I had one of their fans being somewhat moronic on twitter yesterday. He was convinced they were the bigger club, bigger fanbase, had achieved more and would go on to achieve more. I then pointed out that an FA Cup semi final is the highlight of their 128 year history.
Most fans of most clubs look down their nose at us, PNE did it with Hume, Doyle, despiseman not good enough for Barnsley then we sign um it's a joke and such speak, even now in this league people don't rate us were 7th favorites for promotion behind pig utd, Preston, Donny, P'Boro, Bristol City, & orient. In the last ten years no one in this as spent as long as us at a higher level, yet they write us off still, if we win this league next season by record points and brake the clean sheet and goal scoring records we'll not be seen as the best team ever to win league 1, 2014/15 will go down as the weakest standard league one ever, amongst fans of other clubs and media anyway
Ah, Plymouth. I think I remember them. Weren't they the ones being so outplayed by us in their own stadium that they had to get the game called off?
It's a strange phenomenon with Barnsley - most clubs/fans seem to think we are some lower league club who has just happened to be punching above their weight for the last few years when in reality the second tier has always been our level and we've been in that division longer than anyone else. Not saying that's anything to be particularly proud of as it makes you wonder why we have not had more than one go at the top tier, but it's where we've generally been and our stays in the third and, (gulp), fourth tier have, historically, been relatively short ones. At this moment in time, it would be foolish to call a move from Plymouth to Barnsley a 'sideways step'. Just like with any of our players, if O'Brien and O'Grady go to Rotherham (which I believe is a strong possibility) you'd have to say that is a step up for them as it stands.
You're joking, right? In terms of divisions, yes. But on any other basis? No. Plymouth are bigger than Rovrum.
They think they're Wednesday in more ways than one, delusion about being a big club and they're all f*cking each other.
I don't give a ***** about size of club it means nothing to me, Every day of my life, my time is split between Barnsley and Rotherham and on a daily basis I see a lot more Rotherham shirts then I do Barnsley , at this moment in time they have the feel good factor about them, their fans show pride and passion for their club, when you hear them speak, Where as most Barnsley fans are ashamed to be associated with the club, at RUFC everyone wants at be associated with them. Everyone of their advertisement boards are full, nationwide company's sponsor them, so many company's want to be involved with the club they've got sponsored vest for the program sellers and car park attendants, they have a club shop bursting with choice, their stadium and training complex is just as good as any in the championship, they've sold more season tickets then us, wile we've been scrapping and battling to hold on to the past for the last 5 years, they've been building and progressing as a club and have blossomed into something we can only dream about these days. A well run club with a team playing attractive attacking winning football . Are Rotherham United a bigger club then us ? who cares ? Are they a better club then us ? Absolutely
You see, I actually applaud you for putting that together. Very well put, and agreeable in parts. But here's my problem with it - you are hard to take seriously, pal. You say you don't care about how big a club we are etc, yet you're forever bairning about us being small time. You spent weeks last season telling us you'd be happy to be a L1 club forever, who were regular top ten finishers but never got promotion. You said you'd like us to change our name, our badge, to take on 'Yorkshire' or 'Tykes' and get shut of 'Barnsley'. You wanted a new stadium. Hell, you basically spoke as though you were ashamed of the club you support and wanted a brand new one. In other words, you - to me - are exactly the fan you're talking about in the above post quoted. But ignoring that, and focusing on the good points you made, I have to nod my head in agreement at a lot of what you say there. However, what is happening at Rotherham is nothing more than what happened at Donny a few years ago, and to a lesser degree, Chesterfield. New stadium bounce. And an owner/board with more money than their divisional counterparts. As I said a few weeks ago on the same subject, I wish Rotherham all the best. Like ourselves, they've the futile battle of attracting supporters in a town full of Wednesdayites. I have no axe to grind with them and I hope they dent a few egos next season and retain their rare status as a second tier club. But history is against them, as it is Donny. They haven't the fanbase to prosper in that division without serious financial backing. But while ever Stewart is there, they could have a chance. Good luck to em. Few things I disagree with though... Their stadium and training complex are not just as good as any in the Championship. They don't play attractive football. They are not a better club than Barnsley FC. In fact, to say that or agree with that comment takes me back to my original point - I'm not sure anyone else is ashamed to be 'associated' with BFC. I think though that you yourself are. You've admitted your father is/was a Miller, and that you're from Rotherham. I get the feeling you'd be better off supporting them, mate. One quick final point - your endless bleating for the last month about us being a joke, and Danny/Ben being knobheads, that we should be signing a shed load of players etc... again, it only brings me back around to thinking you're supporting the wrong club. And don't get me started on your views on race etc. The post of yours quoted shows you to be a sensible and erudite bloke. I hope the other posts of yours that I've touched upon are merely wind ups, or made in boredom. You do say that you attend practically every BFC game, home and away. That takes some doing. You've seen a lot of defeats/**** displays. Yet you're still there, which shows you're not soft. I applaud that support, and your post quoted. Just confused as to which Nightmare I'm speaking to at times. You long winded Reds.
So everyone keeps telling me. We'll evaluate that when they've been in the second tier for eight years fighting a lost cause.
It's reight though. Anybody would think they'd won the FA Cup, were in the Premier League and were signing Luis Suarez whilst Microsoft sponsored their kit the way folk are going on about how 'great' Rotherham are in comparison to us. When in reality, they scraped into the second tier on penalties (as we did 8 years ago) and have signed Matt ******* Derbyshire. Come back to me when they're flying high in the second tier next season.
They've had two promotions in two seasons, increased their attendances by over 100% and built a new ground. It's not bad going is it? They've probably reached their glass ceiling but they've done as well as they can in a short space of time. You've been critical of our lack of ambition and professionalism Whitey. Don't go back on that now.
You say Plymouth are a better club and more ambitious, I asked you a simple question yet you refuse to answer it. Another reason why people think you are a miserable person
They've done well, yes, with a bigger budget than the majority of their competitors the last two years. And we'll see now how they fare in 'our' position. But I'm going back on nowt, mate. I've not bigged up BFC in terms of ambition etc in this thread. My thoughts on that subject are well known and shared by many I would assume. You'd have to be somewhat dazed or confused to think our club/board are doing well off the pitch, and it's been that way now for far too long and has certainly been the key factor in our relegation. So I'm not contradicting myself. All I've said is that I don't buy into this 'Rotherham are better/bigger' than us. We've swapped divisions. If in eight years time we're still in the pub league and Rotherham have been solid Championship material taking in trips to Wembley etc and spending millions on players and courting gates of over 20,000 then I'll accept they're bigger/better.
