Seriously, if Suarez has bitten someone again, what should the sanction be?

I think all games in group D are now nil and void and the World Cup put on hold whiles the group plays again minus the player in question

He doesn't think, it's purely instinct. Did he have psychological help before? Some folk punch, some kick, some spit - he bites.

 

A two footed tackle is bad sure, especially one designed to hurt, but psychologically being bitten by grown adult is worse, it's creepy, it's sadistic, it's just plain bizarre, you just never expect it on a football pitch, you don't expect it anywhere.

I'll turn your idea around if I may, what would happen to him and to the whole sport if he isn't given serious punishment.

What does that tell him and others, what does it say to the kids who idolise him?

 

That you can end a career with a two footed tackle but you'll be banned for longer for biting someone?

Immediate ban from international games. That's all that can happen isn't it? I'd make sure he misses the WC and next qualifying for SAm Euros whatever they're called. Maybe a 4yr ban, so a full WC cycle.

He can play for his club, and get some help.

We're talking about another human being biting another human being in a game of football. It's ******* sick.

Not only that, it's the THIRD time he's done it. In three different countries. On top of that, he's ******* racist. He's everything that football 'says no' to. Yet he's also the football writers player of the year. The same writers who vilified him last time he tucked into an opponent. The player that commentators verbally orgasm over on MOTD/Sky etc.

I've no such need to build up or knock down a footballer, my job/salary/reputation is unaffected by it. So I can say it how I see it and with no agenda. On the pitch, he's a racist, vile creature who's also a fantastic footballer. No idea what he's like away from football. Maybe he bites folk? Maybe he calls other human beings of different ethnicity racist names?

First off, he should be kicked out of the World Cup. I expect that's nailed on.

And for me, I'd ban him indefinitely. I hear Jay's point above, regarding what effect it may have on him, but I'm not arsed. I can only go on what I've seen, and I've seen him bite three other players and after being accused of being racist he tried to pass it off as a normal thing in his country and then refused the hand of Evra the first time they met again. Great footballer, mind. But I'd rather worry about the game and the future generations watching his 'actions' than Luis Suarez and his 'feelings' etc.

It is creepy and bizarre, which is why there are so many calls for such harsh punishment. Understandably so, we don't really understand an adult biting someone else, but I really don't think I'd be psychologically scarred by someone biting me. If they took a chunk out of me I would, or bit me in the face, but a nip on the arm or shoulder? I'd just think they were a ******* loony who needed serious help.

I'm not advocating no punishment at all. I don't think he should play again in this world cup, be that just one more game should Uruguay get knocked out in the second round, or the whole tournament if they get all the way to the final. I believe that sends a message to kids who idolise him. Do this kind of thing and you'll miss out on the greatest tournament in the world, the highlight of your career. It'll certainly affect Suarez. If they do lose in the next round he'll blame himself as he couldn't play. If they progress he'll kick himself forever that he has missed out on his country's greatest achievement. Something he should have been part of if it wasn't for his own stupid actions.

I don't know what further punishment will achieve. The punishment that will hurt him most has already been carried out. He'll be devastated. At that point he needs help, if, as BRF pointed out, he wants it and he's willing to accept it. If he doesn't, **** him, ban him. But if he wants to change, let's try to help him.

Dunno what happens if he does it yet again though.

 

Given that this is his third offence and that 6 and 10 game bans have done nothing then banning him for one match, even if it is at the world cup sends what sort of message?

I'd say a one year international ban and 15 match domestic will really hit him hard and send a warning to everyone else that this is very serious.

If he wants to get help then he gets help (and he should get help if he wants to have any sort of mental health) , that is up to him, but it should be as well as a serious punishment.

That's my point, punishment hasn't done any good at all. So why will it work this time? Let's stop hitting him with a stick and start trying to help him. I'm not talking about trying to reform a serial rapist, it's someone who has bitten three people without causing any damage at all really, apart from 1000s of blown fuses in the minds of the watching public. Suarez is an amazing footballer. I believe a sport the size of football, with wealth it has, should be concerned when one of its superstars is off the rails. People watch football because of people like Suarez. It's people like Suarez who bring in the wealth. When it's so obvious he has problems, the sport should have a duty of care towards him. Banning him from this world cup is punishment. Then he needs help.

You're not going to agree with me mate, and I'm not even trying to change your mind. I believe what I have described is what should happen, but it's not the right course of action, it's just my opinion.

The action of biting is outside the realm of football fouls and outside general social behaviour, which is where the shock value comes from.

He could have punched him, headbutted him, broken his leg in a malicious tackle and all of those would have seen less shock and outrage than an action that hasn't caused any lasting damage or indeed drawn blood.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not condoning it. I just find it interesting to note the reactions to something that's socially abhorrent yet not physically damaging.

I agree with Jay, he needs help as it's clearly not a calculated thing, it's an instant emotional reaction.

I'd obviously ban him but I'm not sure how you work out for how long. What are we comparing it to? It's ok screaming that we give him a permanent ban, and but that's not really comparable given he's not broken bones or skin.

 

Barcelona are going to have to stick with Neymar partnering Messi next season now until his ban is over.

 

I have no love for Liverpool.

But they would, rightly, go crazy if Suarez were banned from playing for them.

It's like me going to Brazil on holiday, biting an Italian tourist, and being given a short spell in prison.

When I get home, having been loved by a man called Carlos in a Brazilian jail, I then find that the British government have banned me from going back to work in my job in Liverpool.

Not my employer's fault I misbehaved in my own time.
