It shows how the media and politicians trick people into believing in things that just aren't true.

It's actually a very informative survey. If you think about it and look beyond the headlines.

Of course they are, otherwise the perception figures would not be over 100%

It was actually commissioned by the Church of England but has been used in the Independent and New Statesman as far as I know.

It's not about stigmatising it's about perceptions. Its about how people are conned into believing stuff that just isn't true.

Its an apolitical survey so it doesn't matter what your politics are. Nor is it about your class as it was cross demographic it's about popular misconception. People are conned particularly by the right wing press (usually owned by foreigners who pay no tax) or politicians. The facts are very different as the survey shows. It's pretty straightforward.

People are NOT conned about Islam.........as being the biggest threat to world peace and the biggest threat to the safety of you and members of your family.

The police are currently keeping the lid on dozens of terrorist attacks in this country every year

Lets hope that your close relative is not in London when you first hear about the one that slipped through the net

Again the survey is not about one thing in particular. It is about people's misconceptions. About people thinking one thing and another being true. There are other similar surveys which all point to the same thing.

Biggest threat to world peace? Interesting. There is one country right wing and Christian that had been involved in more conflicts and instigated more wars than another country over the last 60 odd years. They have funded terrorists, destabilised governments. Invaded countries for the most superiors of reasons (often untrue such as the Weapons of Mass Destruction) but in reality to protect their economic interests. Of course the right wing press and governments themselves keep a lid on it until it pops out like the Contra affair or bites them on the ass like the Taliban.

I've used this before on here but always think its worth repeating. Quote from the TV show The Newsroom. Note the last line:

'Here are some things done on American soil in the name of Christianity. The Ku Klux Klan burned down black churches, raped women, murdered civil rights workers, murdered children and terrorized communities for over a century. The Neo Nazis all acted and continue to act in the name of white Christian supremacy. The Army of God fatally attacks abortion clinics and doctors across the country. The Covenant, the Sword and the Arm of the Lord targets local police and federal agents. The federal building in Oklahoma City. The attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan and the successful assassinations of Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy, John Lennon, and Abraham Lincoln, all perpetrated by Christians. Miss Greer, we weren't attacked by Muslims, we were attacked by sociopaths, and I for one would join you in protesting a community center for the criminally insane, but no one is suggesting building one.'

Ark,what your post shows is there's bad people in all walks of life,it doesn't mean there's no threat from muslims, the attacks they did,7/7, 9/11, in particular show what they are capable of.But its plainly obvious they arnt all like that.

But that's his point - these people who committed those acts were terrorists who were Muslims, the IRA were terrorists who were Catholics, but we didn't lump all Catholics together did we? We don't talk about "those Catholics are at it again", we didn't spread fear about Catholics.
Not all Catholics were terrorists, similarly neither are all Muslims and we should not define them as such.

.........Ku Klux Klan !!!........you haven't mentioned the Crusades

Key words there are 'American soil'...........we all know that the mid-west is full of redneck nutters........but even they haven't stooped to the depths of be-headings and the torture and killing of women in the street

We are talking about the here and now.............and how easily it is to interpret the Quran in which ever way you want.
It is wrong to say that some Muslims mis-interpret the Quran - they don't. The believe in what they read.

As for the IRA..........have people already forgotton.........yes Catholics and anyone with an Irish accent was under suspicion in those days
There was a program on Radio 4 only a couple of weeks ago where a guy said that during the troubles he could not be in the same room as an Irish person.

I genuinely can't understand how any educated people can believe in a God. I find the whole thing baffling.

I can understand people from poverty stricken countries who lack an education or who don't have technology, books etc to see the bigger picture but it's clearly a load of ******** to anyone with a proper education.

Anyway, each to their own & all that I guess. I've nothing against anyone religious I just can't understand how they can believe in something/one that it's pretty obvious doesn't exist.

The fact that almost every war is caused by religion is a scary thought. Fighting over nothing

I hear people say this a lot but is it true? WWI, WWII, Vietnam, Korea, Gulf Wars 1 and 2, none of them were religious in nature.

I don't see why believing in god is "clearly a load of ********" either. I don't think there is a god but I wouldn't dismiss belief as ********. There's a tendency amongst atheists to get sneery and it just looks a bit ****tish.
