Very easy to forget Jacob is only 23. He seems to have been around forever.

I reckon he needs to sign up today and then man up a bit. He's lucky Danny has tolerated his occasional lachadeisical tendencies so far. A better attitude and he could be the anchor of our new look midfield (with Brian Howard to guide him). With O'Houlihan to provide the creative spark it could look good if we can avoid injuries or suspensions.

Bugger me, I'm almost feeling positive!

for occasional, read 'entire season'. he didn't give a **** in the Champ, how much is he going to care in L1?!? the Club have done this to play the compensation card. he won't kick another ball for us. and i don't really care if he doesn't

He'd be best player in this league if we kept him. He started to look a proper player in the Championship until Flicker told him he couldn't be trusted in centre mid and shoved him wide right, then got slated for not being a winger. Play him centre mid, give him the responsibility of being our main player and he might turn into a star. Or keep shoving him wide and telling him he's not good enough to play in the middle then blame him when he doesn't fill his potential.

This^^^^. The fact that more people were arguing that Dawson should sign then are arguing for Mellis to sign is shear madness.

Would be more than happy to see Mellis sign. Fantastic talent and still only 23.

I'd be very happy if he signed. New season. New start. Even at his worst twice the player that Dawson will ever be.

I like him, but unless he can change the way he plays i dont think he can play in a central midfield pairing. The new lad is a box to box player, and if he's attacking then is Mellis up to providing cover? I think he could play in a three across midfield, but i doubt Danny will go that way.

Mellis typifies what's wrong with footballers in the modern era, overrated, overpaid And uninterested. He might well be the best in the division based on potential but doesn't have the desire to fulfill it so sack him off.

It's a tough one. Mellis doesn't have the defensive side to his game so if you play him it'll be in a midfield 3 which means we'll be going with a 4-5-1 in all likelihood so there's less chance of Rose getting his chance. So from that perspective I'd rather he didn't stay but at the same time there is a good player in him & he could be a star for us at this level if he can fulfil his potential

No denying the lad is talented but he thinks that means everything. His work rate is absolutely diabolical. If he put as much effort in on the pitch as he did at off pitch pranks it'd be great.

He can have all the talent in the world but when your work ethic is as poor as his and you give zero effort (even in the middle) then he's a waste of a player. Teams will just walk through a midfield that has Mellis in the middle.

Looked a cut above when we played Coventry in the cup last season so I've no doubt he'd be a great player for League1. He's flawed definitely but at 23, he's got plenty of time to mature.

I hope he signs, if his attitdue is right and that's a big IF then we have the best midfielder in the division. If he doesn't sign he'll end up finding a club in the Championship and probably end up scoring 15 goals this season, just to kick us in the choppers.

I'm not too fussed what happens either way, but if I had the choice then I'd prefer we retained him.

He didn't have a great season last year, but he was still better than most for me. But the thing is with lads in that position, if they're not regularly creating and/or scoring then folk start expecting them to run around like a madman putting wild tackles in, to compensate or summat. But then when they do that, and get sent off, they're given **** for that as well.

Just like our last attacking midfielder named Jacob, he gets stick for his work rate. Even when JB was in his best spell for us, folk would jump on him the first game he didn't score/create. They'd say he couldn't tackle, that he wasn't vocal enough etc etc. It's ********. And unfair. But that's football fans for you. The same fans who'll credit useless ******* at the same time for their sole ability to run around a lot.
But I don't think this Jacob is as good as the last, biased though I am. He's got similar qualities, but lacks the energy and crucially in my opinion, the speed of thought. His whole demeanour in the main smacks of lethargy. The total opposite to JB.

It's a naughty one, I admit. Because whilst there's a player in there who could do some real damage in this division, there's also a player in there who could seriously damage us in this division.

If there are indeed 'showdown talks' as the OP puts it, then I for one will be wiping the slate clean should Jacob decide to sign a new contract with us. If he departs, good luck to him. I've enjoyed watching him a lot more than most laikers over the last couple of years.

And, by all accounts, this Hourihane kid is talented, and can run around a lot. Alongside Digby, I hope he thrives and puts in central midfield displays akin to those put in by JB and Drinkwater a few years ago. I've missed having a proper central midfield. Seen some right twaddle in there lately. So much so that I still rate Hassell's performance in there at Leeds as our best last season, which says it all.

Saw him out jogging in Staincross the other night. Does he live up at Wooley too like COG?
