Little discussion in the local tonight about the England team and world class players. So, in your view, who was the last "world class" player England had in their team. For the record I said Gazza with Michael Owen a close second (when he wasn't injured) Was Beckham world class? (Sold a lot of shirts...)
Dislikable little ***** but Ashley Cole in his prime was probably good enough to walk into most international sides other than that Gazza, Owen for a few short years possibly Lineker.
Gazza for a true world class player. Would agree with JC about the others. In my lifetime though Keegan as well. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Plenty were world class, too many to mention. But if we're talking truly great players for England on the biggest of stages, then you'd have to go back to Gazza I reckon. But honourable mentions for Beckham, Shearer and of course, Steve Stone.
Gascoigne, Shearer, Lineker, Beardsley for me. All different styles. Our game has stood still since Euro 96 for me.
Ashley Cole would have walked into any side in his peak. Paul Scholes too. You'd have to look to Gazza before that.
I know it's in vogue to slate Gerrard at the moment, and he never found his greatest form for England, but at his best he was world class. Liverpool wouldn't have won owt without him. Ferdinand in his pomp was one of the best centre halves too. Reading of the game was amazing
Never said it was a bad thing, but when it is all you have thats when the problems start. Just my opinion anyway, plenty of others think he is fantastic.
Certainly divides opinion does Rio. Just loved that he never had to go to ground, just always there to intercept or take it off the striker's toe. Which was the polar opposite of me who had to fling myself last ditch in to every tackle!
I'm with Mark on this one miles behind being a truly world class player compare him to say Vincent Komoany or Lahm. Always struggling using his pace to hide the many limitations
