So it's already been twenty years since USA '94, and today is the twentieth anniversary of quite possibly the most tragic day for the World Cup - the senseless murder of Andrés Escobar. I was only 11 back then, but I remember it so well and I'm still kinda angry about it. Why would anyone do such a thing? So tragic and needless. RIP Andrés, I hope that Colombia wins for you on Friday... <img src="https://d3j5vwomefv46c.cloudfront.net/photos/large/858956889.jpg?1404327520">
Would love for them to win the World Cup. It seems such an open tournament at the moment that anything is possible. Such a tragic incident, an innocent person senselessly slaughtered for something so small
They're one of two teams I'm hoping will progress (Costa Rica are the other). Which means, sadly for them, both will get knocked out.
If you've not seen it I highly recommend the documentary The Two Escobars. About the horrific and brutal murder of Andres and the barbaric rise to being the ultimate drug kingpin Pablo. If you've never heard of Pablo Escobar before Google him. He was one evil and dangerous man. The complete polar opposite of Andres Escobar.
A terrible event without question, but he wasn't actually murdered purely because of the own goal, as is common belief. There may have been a comment about the own goal as part of the argument that led to his shooting, but it was just a typical random violent incident in a violent country, that had more to blame on the general lawlessness of the place at that time than the World Cup incident. There's never been anything to link the murder to any shady gambling syndicate as retribution for costing them loads of money, which was the theory at the time.
Is it Pablo that had a zoo in his grounds that has now produced a colony of hippos in remote parts of Colombia?
It is yeah. I saw that on BBC news the other day and it made me re-watch the documentary. A bit spooky this topic came up really.
Aye. I remember this. Bad job all round. Basically there was that much air travel round the U.S. It couldn't be monitored. Someone got upset when Columbia were eliminated.
I posted a link to that very documentary last year at some point on here, free to watch online. It's a masterpiece of viewing. Corruption ruined the lives/careers of so many great Colombian players. It would appear that at last, the nations best footballers are now free to win and aren't 'performing' for a ******* basterd of a human being. Personally, I'd like Germany or Belgium to win it because I had a bet on them and Chile (and whisper it, Ivory Coast). However, if Colombia did it I'd be delighted. Huge game on Friday. Win that, then who knows?
