What's the first computer / games console you had. And let show your age even more. What's the first game and do you remember how long it took to load. (Yes kids, they took ages with that horrid noise)
Spectrum 48K The first game I had was a chess game. Wouldn't have minded, but if you made a bad move it laughed at you!
Re: Spectrum 48K Lo I can imagine the attempt at the noise it made aswell, like a robot from the smash advert
Re: Spectrum 48K You obviously had one! Bought my daughter a Sega Megadrive about '93. Thought it was amazing!
Sharp MZ80K Built in B&W screen and cassette storage (took 30 mins to load a 250 record database) First game a simple one I wrote using the wacky keyboard on the PC and Sharp basic language. Strangely based on a mountain rescue where an avalanche /lack of oxygen and bad weather made it a time limited rescue (sounds bad enough -looked even worse)
A ZX80. Flat keyboard, 1k RAM. I was inseparable from it. Until then I was just a nerd with no place to go. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZX80
First computer was sinclair ZX81, with the nylon keyboard. Then Spectrum 48k, then 128k with built in tape deck. First games I remember were Hungry Horace and Horace goes skiing. First console was a Grandstand which was just games based on bat (a line) and ball (a dot).
Commodore 64. It was my brothers but it I classed it as mine. My favourite (and probably first) computer game was Motor Mania ... loved it. And you had to, having to wait about 2 minutes for it to load. And you need to programme it to run ... none of this click start > games > exe file in them days.
ICL Mainframe 1981. Well it belonged to Barnsley Tech not me, but it was first one I used, via terminals connected to it. I went on a computer course at the Tech and there it was the ******* with a language called COBOL to master, a bit like Swahili. Also went on placement at Barnsley Council Computer Centre (behind town hall, IBM) and British Steel Stocksbridge computer department (IBM). After the course I got a YTS job at Lyons Bakery in 1982, and had one of their only two Apple II's allocated to me as I was a hotshot computer expert fresh from college. These rudimentary PC's were nowt like the mainframes I'd used, and I had to learn from scratch, mainly on an early spreadsheet called Visicalc. I suppose I was only 18 so it seemed piss easy as you can pick owt up at that age. I did eventually master a computer programming language called Focus, before leaving it behind as being too dull. I never played games on them, but I was a regular at Playland; galaxian, invaders, defender, asteroids, Nudge EW Double Up bandits (technician status*). * Nine down for the melons, 10p to do it for you.
And this was my favourite game, until I found football related games.
ZX Spectrum 48k I think it was called. Best game Football Director by D&H games. I used to work at The Computer Store in Barnsley .. (Top of Market Street) ..back in the day and actually sold a Amiga 500 to my one time Hero Andy Rammell. It was £399 but I sold it to him for £299.
