I've noticed that a few on here see M'voto as being a slow defender. In fact from what I've seen he's the quickest defender we have. What people mistake for a lack of pace is actually a lack of agility. (FIFA stats back me up) I remember him missing that open goal against Huddersfield last season. He didn't half shift then to run 50/60 yards although the less said about the finish the better... I think Peter Clarke or Zat Knight would be the ideal CB partner for him.
He is fast over a long distance but he is very very slow over short distance and his reaction time is laughable slow. Definitely needs some speed of some kind at the side of him (if he is first choice).
Agree he is quick when he doesn't need to turn. However my concern is his positional awareness. He runs out of line so often leaving a hole in the back 4. If they can coach that area then he'll be a decent/good defender. However if clubs had seen that potential in him I doubt he would be here. Let's wait and see, get behind him, and hope he builds on some of the good performances last year.
Trouble is fast defenders often cost loads. Hopefully most League 1 teams will play the way I'm expecting them to.... the hoofball tactic
You dont need pace to be a good centre half. Obviously it helps. But positioning and concentration are the most important attributes. Look at David Luiz, all the ability in world, great ball control, 6 ft 2 and a big frame, hes not slow either. But as a defender he is woeful. He just completely positional defensive instinct. For me M'Voto showed improvement last year. He's definitely worth a go this time around.
His problem isn't pace. You can be the fastest player going and it won't make up for being 30 yards out of position, missing your kick/treading on the ball/ ripping a players shirt off his back, not seeing danger or gifting the ball to the opposition. If Danny wants us to play quicker passing attacking football, i'm not really sure how he fits in to the side. My expectation is 2nd reserve centre half this year and released in June 2015.
Pace is not an essential for a centre half. My favourite all time centre half Paul Futcher wasn't exactly speedy. But and it's a big but in Big John's case you need to compensate for a lack of pace with a football brain, an ability to read situations well and good positional sense. As it stands today we do seem a little one paced across the back 4 but I'm sure Danny will be addressing that.
Paul Futcher could have played with 1 leg. He knew what was going to happen 30 seconds in advance, and just shuffled into position and waited for the ball to arrive.
I loved the fact that Futcher looked like someone's dad who had shuffled onto the pitch but pretty much controlled most forwards most weeks by Knowing what they were going to do before they did.
Firstly a CB partnership of Knight and M'voto would scare me to death..And also underestimate apposing managers at you peril. Do you think they will keep the ball in the air, and give M'voto an easy day .....yer right, they'll know all about him pal
Don't understand a lot of the stick M'Voto gets. Thought he looked clumsy the first couple of times I saw him but then I thought he came into his own a bit. My only main worry with him is the fact that he fancies himself as a bit of a ball playing centre half. That could cause problems if he regularly loses the ball say around the half way line. I'm a big fan of Jean Yves' and firmly believe he's the commanding centre half we've been after since Shackell left.
His problem isn't on the whole defending, he can tackle, run and head very well indeed. It's his distribution once he's done the hard bit, which is awful. I for one trust him to get it right with a bit if time. Please let's not make him into the next target for sniping, because he's much better than that.
I don't rate Mvoto much but see how he could do a decent job in League 1. Albeit I still see him as back up to a preferred first choice defensive pairing made up of Cranie +1 with Tangs bossing it a LB until we ditch Kennedy and bring in a **** hot Roberto Carlos type. I will not be knocking our players this season though as I want to be as positive as possible to support the changes in team policy and long term strategy that we are now seeing (although Kennedy is borderline which makes me a partial hypocrite). UTR and Up The Big ******* Jean.
The first 5 yards are in the head, as many have rightly said on here Paul futcher... Our own cheaper and older version of Alan Hansen was a master at being in the right place at the right time, seeing the game in your head and anticipation often negates the need to run about like a headless chicken M'voto maybe suffers from being tall and awkward so his slowness is more noticeable as well?
