Yes, I've done them from both sides. Personally I think they're a complete waste of time so all I can say is keep your answers as succinct as possible.
I've done one before & it was one of the worst experiences of my working life. They were asking absolutely anything technical about the subject (I was in IT at teh time). All I remember is me saying "errrm, wait , give me a minute to think about that". As they can't see you, they didn't seem to want to ask any of the what I call "fluffy" interpersonal skills type stuff. Needless to say I didn't get that job. So my advice to you would be to make sure you know the technical part of the job inside out. That said it could be totally different nowadays, I was talking nearly twenty years ago. Other than that, sorry mate can't really help much, but good luck. What's the job for anyway?
It is part of the screening for a role with the IPCC as an investigator. I know about the role but I have never done a telephone interview - anyway 1 hour to go!
Treat it pretty much the same as a face to face interview but minus the interview clothes. When talking on the phone with them sit up properly and speak clearly just as you would face to face. If you are laid down or slouching during the interview they will probably be able to tell. Do plenty of research about the company incase they ask questions, but don't make your answers sound generic or like you're reading from a script.
Last time I did a telephone interview I'd been out drinking the night before and only woke up when my phone rang - I had to try to sound alert and focused whilst lying in bed with an absolute b'stard of a hangover. When it finished she said that I'd come across very well and invited me to a face to face interview though, so she probably couldn't tell. Either that or she thought it'd be a right laugh to see if I'd turn up on the day in a similar state of disarray. But yes, don't do that! Dreamboy's advice is very good. I assume if it's for the IPCC then it'll be a 'first stage' interview with a view to a face-to-face one or assessment centre afterwards - in that case they might focus more on the motivation side of things (so make sure you know exactly why you're applying!). But just in case, as with any interview for a job in the public sector, go through the person specification and make sure you've got a concrete example of something you've done personally to show how you meet all of the competencies, and commit them to memory.
Worked on a secondment basis for IPCC for a couple of months if I can be of any help drop me a PM. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
interviews freak me out. i have one in a couple of weeks. for my current job. with my current boss. that's gonna be a bit weird.
Normally I don't mind interviews but applying for your own job is just ******* rubbish. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
aye. to be fair though, it is for a promotion. and i'm the only person being interviewed for it. and my boss said i'd "earned my stripes" in my mid year appraisal three weeks ago. if i don't get it, i think i'll go work on the bins
