good move for all concerned that i guess..... However this move was touted before Robins got the sack so who is in charge of doing the recruiting at Huddersfield i wonder? Clearly it wasn't Robins hth
Two things that might concern different people...... 1) It his 4th club in no time at all. He really needs to settle long term at a club now. That would be best thing for his career. 2) If whoever comes in doesn't want him then what? Always odd signing players when you've no manager.
He should never have left us. I always thought it was the wrong time for him to move and another season or so would with us would have been in his best interests.
the lure of the £ note got him MK....and for that reason, i would have done exactly the same. plus he will have made god knows what in transfer fees etc. Can't blame the lad really. way of the world unfortunately
We can kick this one around but Whitey will know the full SP. I do remember Robins saying when he was at Barnsley "Jacob Butterfield is a very important player in the future of this football club." That was of course before we hacked Robins off by selling the player he was trying to build his team around (Shackell). We haven't had a decent defence since, and our other assets (Butts, Stonesy) were sold off leading to the third rate team we put out last year and the current predicament we find ourselves in. Hopefully Danny is addressing this, given time. But a really solid defensive pairing is becoming an urgent priority. The rest of the squad has promise, but this needs sorting quickly. Brown to CB, Cranie to midfield? Big Jean, Brown, Lewin at the back, with Cranie in the centre of a midfield containing wing backs?
If I had been the manager of any club at the time I would have waited to see if he recovered from his injury. Norwich didn't want to wait and finished up buying a crocked footballer.
We could possibly have done a Burnley had we kept the likes of Shackell, Butterfield, Stones, Hammill - think it was more the players wanting to leave though than us wanting to cash in
Agree with you on point number one. On your second point, you're well known for visiting the Town forum (DATM) and seem clued up on the club in general, so I'm surprised you haven't read the statement put out by the club CEO yesterday which explained the move in detail. Of their last three managers, Clark, Grayson and Robins, his name was top of each of their transfer lists. They tried signing him after leaving us, again last summer, and obviously now. And so the club weren't going to pull out of the deal after agreeing everything with him, meeting him etc, just because Robins again walked out of a job. Huddersfield have swapped a player who didn't want to be there, a disruptive influence in the last year of his contract, for £1.5m AND Jacob Butterfield on a four year deal. They'd have been barmy to turn an opportunity like that down. I'm still confused as to how Clayton is all of a sudden so highly rated. Not saying he isn't decent, course he is. But would you pay that kind of money for him PLUS Butterfield? It's not that I'm biased either. I know nobody who understands it. In fact, the vast majority of Boro supporters are stunned by it. But at the end of the day, it's the managers job to lose. If he thinks player 'x' is likely to suit his system more than player 'y' then so be it. Jacob loved playing for Boro, enjoyed a good rapport with the fanbase and was looking forward to continuing his good form from the end of last season. But once the manager tells you that you're unlikely to be first choice, and that another club want to take you, a club in the same division, more local to you, a club who've shown interest in you before, then you at least see what they have to say. He could have said **** off. Said he was going nowhere, sat on his contract and angered Boro, who'd have then struggled to afford Clayton. But after meeting with Town he was told all the right things and decided to be professional about it and leave on good terms. It is a bit weird to be joining without a manager, granted. But at worst he's on a level playing field. And at best, Tony Mowbray, Neil Lennon or Malky Mackay get the job, all managers who've sought to recruit him in the past. I'm selfishly happy because it's a 30 minute (rather than a 90 minute) drive to games now. And the first chance I've got to see him will be mid September when Town play..... Boro.
I've been over this before, lots of times. He was offered a 12 month deal on (4k p/w) four times his previous wage with an option for a second year, to stay at Oakwell. Don't forget, the club gave Mido 5k a week that summer. Whereas, a Premier League club offered him a four year deal on wages that Barnsley have never paid a player. A club where he fancied his chances of breaking into the team. He'd have been a fool to turn that down to stay with us. He'd have also been given grief by the fans had he not been amazing from day one. Bit like Reuben now. Or, folk would have said he was only here because he couldn't get a move, blah blah blah. I love my club, and don't get me wrong, I wish he 'could' have stayed here, especially after seeing how things have panned out. But come on, he's still a Championship player, earning money that BFC couldn't afford even if we were still in that division. I know you think he's this and that, Lee, despite my telling you otherwise, he garnered a very unfair reputation whilst here. But I implore lads like you to go read the Boro forum, or that statement from Town yesterday. He's adored by the fans, and bigged up by both clubs as a great lad and an ultimate professional. And he is.
Hey cool your jets mate, I wasn't having a go at him, I was just stating that I think his career would have blossomed had he stayed with us. I know you've explained the circumstances previously and I don't dispute them at all - I was just commenting that had contractual T's and C's not been an issue staying with us would have been his best option (IMO).
They, along with Villa, Newcastle, Everton, Boro, Norwich, Cardiff, Huddersfield, Swansea and Sunderland, all made enquiries before his injury. He'd all but agreed to join Newcastle, for £2m before he was smashed by Brown. He'd never have gone to Scotland. Rightly or wrongly, the lad at that point thought he was good enough to play in the Prem. He'd have joined Celtic this week, mind. I'd have enjoyed trips up to Celtic Park more than the John Smiths stadium I reckon.
I've not seen that statement so I will go look for it. I'm not sure how good Adam Clayton is even though he got their player of the year award. The town fans did seem to like him though and him raising money for charity with his beard helped his reputation some more. Jacob joining has definately strengthened their team. Told a few locals last week finishing 4th bottom for them would be a successful season and they thought I was bantering them. I said you've signed a reserve keeper, a loan player, a guy who played in league one last season and a former player. No signing to write home about. Him and Hammill in the same team is good though.
Cool as the Fonz, me. Must be the internet and words reading differently to how they're typed out. Just bugs me when folk say he should have stayed here. If no Prem club had come in for him, he'd have stayed. It wasn't about the money. He'd have quadrupled his earnings at Tarn. But the lure of the Prem bit him. And were he to play well and garner that sort of interest again, I'd be asking him to stay at Huddersfield, but I reckon he'd take his chance. It's the dream innit? Sad I know, but there you go. ******* Premier League.
Do you get down to watch them at all? They've a few exciting talents in Wells, Lolley and Vaughan (always injured though). And Hammill is good for ten assists and a handful of goals. But he's no wingback. No idea what Robins was doing there. Lillis played 4-4-2 on Tuesday and although they struggled initially, the quality of Wells and Lolley shone through. Jacob has the likes of Hogg, Norwood and Majewski to compete with I suppose. All decent players. It's their defence that worries me. Relegation scrap I reckon, but I hope to be proven wrong as usual. Clayton should do well at Boro, a club on a seriously upward trajectory, spending daft money on foreigners and Karanka's getting his pal Mourinho to loan him talented kids. Can't go wrong..
I can see and understand your/his point but I think he would have been better with another season with us for his developement
Perhaps, pal. But I think he did the right thing, as does he. But as he's said in his interview today, he's not felt appreciated at a club since leaving Tarn. Maybe Huddersfield (similar size, local etc) could be a home now for a few years? I hope so. The last three summers have been hard work on the family I can tell you that. Don't know our arse from our elbows.
more power to the lad and hindsight is always 20/20. I'd have him back in flash, wish him all the best from me.
Must be difficult should I sign for this Club that's offering me thousands a week or this club that's also offering me thousands a week. Wish my summers could involve decisions like that
