No, not a Monty Python thread

I've just signed up to the Open University to do a degree (Student Loan permitting) - the degree is 'Hard Sums with Lies' - well Maths with statistics as they call it

I've decided to study full-time from home - 3 years full time (36 hours per week)

    I'm 55 years young tomorrow

    Am I bonkers?
Am I after my youth? (never went to University after doing A levels)
What the heck am I going to get out of it?

Have any of you guys/gals done anything similar so late in life?

I wouldn't say late in life because I'm only 26 but I've been learning German for the past year through evening classes at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.

Never too late to learn is it? Good luck!

Good for you. I wasted my university experience doing a degree I didn't enjoy and have ended up doing a job I don't enjoy ever since.

Would love to study something I was passionate about.

Part of me feels the same way - I quite enjoyed doing numbers at school (passed O level when I was 14) - passed A level Maths but never went to Uni - got a job in accounts working in the coal industry - then worked for a couple of banks doing audit type work - trained newcomers in this field and realised that I was quite good at this teaching/mentoring lark - part of me wishes I'd been a Maths teacher.

Thanks for your sentiments - I really don't know if it will lead anywhere (cue On the road to nowhere by Talking Heads)

Good for you, mate. It's the best thing I've done (apart from anything family related) when I started mine. To do a degree in something you like and are passionate about doesn't really feel like work.

I know you're into archeol acheaol archemedes....erm digging do you do back gardens? - I once found an old halfpenny in ours

In all seriousness - yes it will not feel like work 'cos I like numbers but I do feel I may have left it late in life. How are you getting on or have you completed it and if so what's the future hold for you?

If you're crackers, well so am I.

Just started a 2 year A level Maths course (distance learning), and a Cert Ed/PGCE (part time) over 2 years as well.

I'm 62. Will be well qualified just in time for retirement.:)

Just doing archaeology was enough for me at first. But, after taking a sabbatical, I decided I wanted to specialise in Ancient Archaeology. The University Of Leicester have given me the opportunity to do just that. I don't know how long it will take, but I'm keen to become a field archaeologist if at all possible.

The Cert Ed/PGCE qualification - does this enable you to teach without a degree?

There seems to be a group of us older fans on here who have gone into further education. :) Does that mean we're a clique?:D

My niece did archaeology - in fact she was on the Time Team - she enjoys it enormously.

Can I be rude and ask how old you were when you started and how long you got til you retire? - I'll be 58 and perhaps 59 if I want to go into teaching

Nice one. Would I know her?
I retired at fifty and started the original course a year later.
