Surely this fixture beats even the Palace-Brighton rivalry as the most tenuous in British football? 45 miles apart and not even in the same county. How is this a derby? More a case of "there's no one else anywhere near us so we will have to dislike them" mentality rather than a genuine rivalry?
Not playing devils advocate and not actually giving a sh*t as I have no allegence to either club other than living down here. You've kinda answered your own question, there's no other teams around here so by default it's labelled a derby. With regards to your idiot mentality statement, I've never met two friendlier sets of fans and I wouldn't say they have a hatred for each other, far from it. More a sporting rivalry. Just how it should be not prats like we have who look forward to trying to pick fights with a team less than 45 miles away. But like I said, I don't actually give a sh*t, I just dislike attention seeking posts that have no real point.
The Liverpool Derby, what a joke, Derby are never even in it, I make no wonder Liverpool always win! (I think that was originally in Viz)
Liverpool v Man u - separated by the east lancs road - pretty fierce rivalry there. Not always proximity that creates rivalries.
Have you run out of turnips for fodder? Who mentioned hatred or picking fights other than you? Although it is true that it's one of the most heavily policed games in England so not sure what that says about your theory. Ever so slightly over the top reaction from you though. Not wholly unexpected.
Having policed the game myself many times, I can safely say that Norwich QPR is far worse. The most violence I saw at Carrow Road when Ipswich came to town was a snowball fight.
Think you'll find Leeds-Man Utd thing is largely a one-way thing and is created in the heds of Leeds fans. Man utd rivalry is with City and Liverpool. If you want to use historical references as to why this rivalry try the building of the Ship canal between Manchester And the Mersey. Apparently this had economic effects for each city that were polarised.
As Tarntyke says, the Man Utd/Leeds rivalry is all one way and just in the heads of Leeds fans who like to believe they're on equal footing. Same with Leeds/Chelsea too really. It stems back to the 1970 Cup final. Well, the replay really, which Leeds lost 2-1. Both teams kicked the hell out of one another for 120 minutes. Despite there being fist fights, head-butts and cynical fouls throughout the game, the ref only booked one player. Leeds feel they were hard done by, often citing the tackle by 'chopper' Harris on Eddie Gray, but that ignores much of what the Leeds players were doing. Jackie Charlton should have been marking Peter Osgood who headed in Chelsea's equaliser but he was too busy chasing another Chelsea player trying to t.wat him.
I've been to Carrow Road several times and always found their fans pretty obnoxious to be honest. Kids throwing stones at us and abusing us on the way out the ground after Higgy's late equaliser in 2000. Parents standing by and laughing.
Correct, plus I must have dreamt about the group of Ipswich fans that tried to kick off us at the top of wembley way before the play off final.
Disagree slightly on the leeds/man utd rivalry... id say the strength of feeling is there from both sides. Even at top Manchester United games anti Leeds songs are audible. I read a 'fever pitch' type book from a man utd fan documenting his travels watching games and he reckoned most long standing fans see leeds as third biggest rivals.
Most Ipswich fans on that day were absolutely fantastic as were the majority of reds fans it was a fantastic day just marred by the reds losing the game. There's idiots in every town /city/village etc and in most cases are in the slight minority until certain games if you encountered an idiot mob of tractor fans at Wembley I'd say you were very very unlucky because all the ones we encountered were a credit to their town/
Packed because they have one home match per season they really care about. If we were in the championship and our only local derby all season was Leeds or Wednesday i'm sure our ground would be pretty packed. But we've so many local derbies (too much of a good thing?) that it doesn't matter if you miss a couple because one will come back around again soon enough.
Couldn't agree more, for the most part Ipswich fans were spot on,the bell ends we encountered were a reight set of fannys anyway and soon backed off when fronted .We had been on the piss in London since the Friday and were nursing reight hangovers by the day of game so were in no mood for a set of nobbers giving it the big 'un, and you are correct in what you say every club in the country has fans that will be out to kick off with fans of other clubs, including followers of both Ipswich and norwhich, sithi.
Whilst they're a long way apart, there's quite a few towns in South Norfolk/north Suffolk that are kind of split between the teams - places like Lowestoft and stuff so I don't know if that intensifies it a bit - bragging rights at work with your mates, that type of thing...
Didn't see the match today but I imagine it was two sets of fans waving rattles furiously throughout and congratulating each other afterwards for a "splendid scrimmage."
