Did you know that a former Barnsley player has been the manager of the Dutch national team? I bet that some of you did, but I had never heard of this before and I found this quite unbelievable! The man in question is Bob Glendenning of our FA Cup winning team, and to this day he holds the record of having the most victories (36 wins in 87 games) as the Dutch coach, and he also seems to be their longest-serving manager (15 years!). He probably would have got even more victories, but then in 1940 Germany invaded the Netherlands and Glendenning passed away later that year. I hope that I wasn't the only one who did not know about this before! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Glendenning
Tomi Another one you might be interested in, try looking on wikipedia for Barnsley born George Raynor.
Thanks for that, it's indeed quite interesting, and I had never heard of him either. Looks like the Swedes have a lot to thank Raynor for, without the man from Barnsley they might have never become an exceptionally good footballing country that they were and still are today. I wish he had come to Finland instead! Raynor's story is quite a crazy one - after coaching the likes of Juventus and Lazio and the Swedish national team with quite big success, he returned to England and could only get a job at Skegness Town in non-league! This little documentary about him is well worth watching:
I use to work at a College in Leeds with one of Bob's Grandsons. His Mother still had his FA Cup winners medal.
