Best bit about this move? The fact it was reported earlier yesterday that he'd signed for AS Roma. Even his cousin Lethal Bizzle was tweeting about it etc. And then he actually signs for a club that I'd literally never heard of in freezing Russia.

I can only assume he's getting silly money. Because why else would he go there?

I was wondering that myself. Certainly Ufa and Kazan are far more tolerant of racial differences than most Russian cities, virtue of the fact that they are capitals of predominantly Muslim republics. But as for the number of inhabitants of African original - that would be sub-Barnsley in the 1980s. And I would guess that the attitudes would be very similar. Chances are he isn't going to be murdered, but he might well get some funny looks, comments, and monkey noises (does the name Harrison Chungo ring any bells?).

As far as Ufa's team goes, I know nothing about them, but I suspect that their meteoric rise from nothing might be something like that of Anzhi, the Dagestan team owned by some local billionaire. Obviously nobody wanted to live in Dagestan, even for the reported 300k euros a week they were paying their foreign stars. So the whole team, including Roberto Carlos and Eto'o lived and trained in Moscow during the week, and flew in for home games. Maybe something similar is going on here. At least Ufa isn't a war zone, unlike Dagestan, but I reckon it would be pretty dull living there. I've been to plenty of provincial Russian cities, and there really is sweet FA to do in most of them after a couple of days. Even if it's a city of a million inhabitants, the fact that most of them live on a few hundred quid a month means that entertainment is severely limited.

Wasn't Chungo the lad we were looking at signing but it never happened because he was racially abused?

    Or am I way off?

Yep, that's right. It must have been about 1989, and we hadn't had a black player I'm guessing since Larry May departed, or possibly Winston Campbell (I was very young at the time). Apparently Chungo came on trial and he was abused in Tarn so the deal never went through. I started watching us in 1987, and the first black player I can recall was Dave Regis in 1996. To be honest, I can fully understand why no black players would come within a million miles of Oakwell. The abuse I remember being handed out in particular to Tony Agana, Brian Deane and Ian Wright was sickening. I also remember one ******** spending the match at Notts County shouting "Barnsley are white" on his own to Devon White, as the useless bugger missed chance after chance. The thing is, if I remember correctly he didn't get thrown out until he ran on the pitch to congratulate Brendan O'Connell for scoring, but I could be getting my games confused.

I started going the year after you and remember the racism. Was pretty common. As it was at most grounds.

Viv Anderson was probably the first black player I remember laiking for us. And managing of course. Wonder what he's doing these days?

    Harrison Chungo

I thought I was the only one to remember him. I think he was staying in the Ardsley House and got set upon just outside.

    Re: Harrison Chungo

Having trouble with the era but don't forget Tony Cunningham - early/mid 80s. Very handy centre forward who I think scored in the 4-3 comeback game against Fulham when we were 3 - 0 down.
As for Frimpong did I imagine a fairly impressive start at Arsenal? My Wolves mate rated him from time there and reckoned he'd keep us up!
So is he talentless or a wasted talent, and a bloody cold one at that?

Must be on decent money, make no sense otherwise.

I can't wait to see his tweets after he's been there a month or two & is bored out of his mind

    Re: Harrison Chungo

I remember an incident remarkably similar to this, but not the lad's name. However, I thought it was far more recent than the late '80s. I thought it was about 10 years ago.

Anderson was in the directors box at oakwell a couple of games ago.

As for Frimpong, i wonder when he'll be on another FIFA video from Russia...
