I know this subject has been covered in the past, but there's little football at the moment.
Mine was Pat Howard, back in the 'sixties. A fellow Dodworther (in fact, he lived just round the corner from me in Gilroyd when I was a kid), Pat was a hard as nails central defender, who could play a bit as well. It broke my heart when he was sold for a mere £21 000 to Newcastle United, just after the start of the 1971/72 season (you see, selling our best players on the cheap has not been just a modern problem at the club). Needless to say, we then proceeded to get relegated back to the Fourth Division. Pat went on to play regularly in the top Division for the next eight years at Newcastle, Arsenal and Birmingham City.

Brian Joicey - when I first started watching regularly he was THE striker - all the old blokes who we used to stand near all rated him, and they'd been going since the 30's/40's - hard to please types so as a novice supporter you looked up to them. He just always seem to score - a rare high point in the days when it looked like we'd be a 4th div club always - then he did the business under Clarkey, 2 in Clarkey's first game I think. Tragic that his career was cut short that season - he deserved a promotion with us on his CV.

He actually scored a hat trick in that game, a 4-2 home win over Halifax Town with Alan Little scoring the other. Derek Bell (who was to sign for us a couple of months later) & Peter Burke (who we'd sold to Halifax the previous season) got their goals.
    I echo your comments, too.

Brendan O'Connell. He just seemed to give it his all every time I saw him. Lots around me back then deemed him a headless chicken. I was only a young lad, my football hero of that time was Gazza, we'd just had Italia 90 etc. Brendan was nowt like him. But for some reason I loved him. He played with such energy. I've seen folk compare the likes of Perkins and Dawson to him. Absolute ********. Played about 250 times for us over the years, scored about 40 goals. Some of them very good. His second goal against the Blunts in 94-95 (after Fjortoft I think had scored for them) was a beauty, his second of the game and until Clint's goal a couple of years later it was probably the most joyous moment of celebration I'd had. Just a shame he left the summer of 96. But Jovo and Shez weren't bad in there with Redders either...

For a little bit it was Roger Wylde as he scored twice in my first match, but my first real hero was David Currie. Anyone who was lucky enough to see him play in his first spell will not need to ask why.

Eric Winstanley - brilliant in the air in the defence - used to love it when he went up for a corner and the ponty chanting Winnie, Winnie Winnie - he also use to be moved up front towards the end of a game when we were in need of goal(s)

Micky Butler little later on his hat-tricks were real poachers goals - remember his comeback after a broken leg v Bradford city & scoring two goals to put us 2-1 in front (sadly we drew 2-2)

Also the one & only Glavin - how on earth did we keep him for so long & how much would he be worth these days

Andy Rammell some what of a unsung hero IMO, always gave 100% and chipped in with a fair few goals (remember his hat-trick VS West Ham), was gutted when he left even more so that we got Dave Regis as part of the deal
