Putting aside the one off event, my in-laws where telling me at the weekend that the EDL are permenantly camped in Rotherham and are verbally abusing and photographing people who refuse to take a leaflet from them. Council staff have been advised by the police to take their name badges off before leaving the building for their own security.

As if Rotherham isn't already on its ar5e enough from the ravages of Meadowhall and the post-industrial decline. My mother-in-law has stopped going shopping there because she doesn't feel safe because of the EDL. That's damaging Rotherham's already fragile economy. And she is a white middle aged woman who feels intimadated by them. Imagine how you'd feel if you were from an ethnic minority group.

I wonder when the EDL will realise they're a massive part of the problem.

Went in to Rotherham town centre for the first time ever this summer. ******* hell, what a run down place that is. Barnsley is nowt to write home about at the moment, but Jesus. I think I went in the very worst pub in the world.

That isn't my point. I am saying that the AFL have no more right to the moral high ground than the EDL; both are as much of a risk to public order yet only one side of the problem is vilified in the press.

i was in Rotherham over the weekend and refused to take a leaflet from the edl and neither I or our lass received any abuse and for the half hour I saw them I never heard any abuse either.

Well I can only relate what I've been told has been the experience of work colleagues and friends of my in-laws. And certainly my father-in-law can in no way be portrayed as a Guardian reading lefty given that the only reading material I have on offer is the Daily Mail when I visit them.

Its awful. Meadowhall just destroyed it, and having a supermarket in the centre has killed off all the small retailers. To be fair the new council offices and the area around the New York Stadium have improved massively but then that's the area being targeted by the EDL.

Just thought it was relevant in terms of where my father-i-law is coming from. Now if it were my dad criticising the EDL then I'd accept he has an agenda - he's more liberal and left wing than I am.

I just really don't get what the EDL's purpose is in being there, or what they think they are achieving. If they think they are making Rotherham a better place then they're wrong. They're scaring away the very people Rotherham needs.

A bunch of racist drunken thugs yes, but they have a right to protest like everyone else. Comparing the 3/4 million cost to the tax payer, against 20mil for Thatchers funeral and 4 billion for will's helipad brings it into some proportion, funny how the media can minipulate.

racists, lets brand everyone a racist then perhaps people will be in fear of saying anything against say peaodaphiles in I don't know lets say erm Rotherham and muslim isn't a race its a religion, ( muslims worship in a mosque) you get muslims of all races ( and the vast majority are fine and dandy) same as jews of all races and Christians of all races, so once again the racist tag is misused by the p.c. brigade, I think you find that whoever is responsible are vandals, or insurance fraudsters or both, I think the vandals where a race from northern Europe, didn't the sack rome with the goths and visi-goths so you're the racist for calling someone a vandal, which like I've explained is a race but muslim isnt

Yes a lot of drunken, bigoted, racist, ****wits have a right to cause all the decent people in the town to be intimidated. Most shops shut. Massive police bill. If you could actually read the article I posted a link to you could see the anti fascists ... not exactly how you describe.
