No to both. Yes to an England assembly.

But let's not go having layer after layer of government.

I also don't agree with Nick Clegg's idea of giving local authorities their own tax raising powers.

No to both but I would be happy with an English assembly.

No. Make the current system work. ie make MP's represent their constituents rather than the party line. Stop lobbying.

Yes to either. But don't add it as an extra level - scrap the House of Lords and put a radically cut down upper house (elected similar to how Westminster is now) in the Houses of Parliament. Then set up regional assemblies to make most of the legislative decisions.

I for one have had enough of being ruled from London.

Where the building is doesn't really matter to me, we are no more "ruled by London" than by anywhere else in regards to Parliament. The MP's who sit there are from around the UK.

Where we are ruled by London, is not by Westminster but by The City.

I'm not clued up enough to know if his proposition would work, there are probably a million holes in it, but it sounds like a good idea to a numpty like me. Fewer politicians but more responsibility and they actually have to work for their money. Such a job might actually attract people who would be good at it rather than those who fancy a free ride. Good article that, thanks for the link.

Agree completely. This is what concerns me about talk of an English Assembly - we run the risk of having 4 layers of Government (EU, UK - Westminster, English Assembly, Local Government).

I favour the idea of Westminster having UK sittings and English sittings on allocated days - use the same MPs that were elected in the General Election for English business. This does create an interesting problem for a potential Labour Government as they may be in a position of having a UK majority whilst having an English minority. Still, you could argue it's what the English electorate voted for.

I personally think the 3 leaders fecked up big time by panicking and "vowing" Devo-max without any clue as to how to deliver such a complex solution, whilst having Gordon Brown commit to an unrealistic timetable for implementation. Whatever the solution, the answer is never "we need more politicians".
